A Sign

This sign will soon become a thing of the past. It came with the house when we bought it in 2003. The name of the street always made me shake my head. Island View Drive? We live on top of a mountain! The other odd thing about it is that it is hanging parallel to the street. You cannot read it unless you stop directly in front of it. I guess the former owners were not too concerned about visitors finding the address. However, next month our area will be switched over to the 9-1-1 emergency system and both our street name and number will change (to something more sensible I might add). So this sign will be not only obsolete, but incorrect in a short while.
Well then its good you got a picture of it! At least its a nice sign an not somethings awful looking!

@sanera lol It will probably remain hanging there even with the wrong address for a while, or I might just turn it around. Who knows! This area is sort of kooky, so an incorrect address would fit right in!

Great catch.

Interesting story behind the picture.

They are changing the name of your street to fit the emergency code?! Where do you live?
Nice sign, even if it's inaccurate! Bet one day you'll be glad you took a photo of it. :)

Wonderful pov and great conversation piece. Everything changes with time, I guess. I'd sure keep this as a momento. Who got to choose the "new" name for the street?
March 13th, 2012
good thing you've posted a picture of it: you might miss it someday:)

@kerristephens Thanks Kerri!
@jmj Thanks Jennifer- we live in a unique (to put it mildly!) area.
@filsie65 Yes they are- but actually what they're it changing to makes more sense! I live on the eastern side of the state of Pennsylvania in an area called The Poconos (these are foot hill size mountains). We are somewhat equidistant to Philadelphia and NYC. If you look at a map of our state, the nearest city is Stroudsburg. It's a fairly nice area for nature. We also have quite a mixture of people- some who have moved here from the city- very urban and some who have lived here for many years- very country. It has its quirks, but it's a fairly nice place to live in many ways. We are happy to be here.
@karenann Thanks Karenann- there was a task force that did that I think. Actually the new name makes more sense. We live on a long road that had three different names. It will now just be the one name from beginning to end.
@woot lol Davide- it's probably not going anywhere!
March 13th, 2012
Funny about the name, maybe it is like our mountains and at times looks like an island floating in a sea of clouds? Anyway, whatever you call it, there "is no place like home"
March 13th, 2012
@pandorasecho lol Dixie- we are not a very high mountain! I think it was somebody being very funny. At the bottom of our mountain we do have a stream- the Bushkill- which has a tiny!!! little island in it, but we can't see it from here.

Thanks for sharing the story. Great shot!!
March 13th, 2012
Well then that will make all things a bit easier

The end of an era. My sister-in-law lived in a small subdivision where the streets were named by the developer. She lived on Stallion Circle. One street over was Gelding Circle. I ask you, where would you prefer to live?
March 14th, 2012
That is a really interesting story Ann. Perhaps the street was named after a person? The suburbs in Canberra are named after politicians.
March 14th, 2012
Cool catch
March 14th, 2012
maybe you have a view of the islands from up where you are? or maybe not. hehe. nice capture.
March 14th, 2012
What a great sign, but alas that is the way of the world...
March 14th, 2012
@cbawernsen Thank you Corine! I'm glad you liked it!
@digitalrn Thanks Rick- it's been needed for a while.
@allie912 Oh my- that was rather bold on the part of the person who named that street!
@nicolecampbell Thank you Nicole! Actually I think it was just someone being funny. Everything around us has a "normal" name- Mountain Top Circle, Ridge Road- and we are Island View Dr.!
@kimmistephens Thanks Kimmi!
@summerfield Only in my mind Vikki! Thank you!
March 14th, 2012
@httpgeffed Thanks Colleen- oh it's alright about the sign- really no one can read it as they drive by anyway!
March 14th, 2012
good shot!
March 14th, 2012
What a really cool keepsake!! The story on the name is funny too!!
March 14th, 2012
That is a cool sign and I like how you explained all its little quirks!
March 14th, 2012
@melee09 Thanks Melee!
@twinsplusone Thanks Sharon! Life in the Poconos is never what you expect it to be!
@deniseinindy Thank you Denise. This is definitely a quirky area! But we like it here! Oh- and so sorry about Peyton!!!

Bev
it's a great photo. i'd restore the sign and keep it. it's iconic. you'll miss it.

They've changed my Mom's mailing address three times and her street name once. Good thing she lives close by and I don't send her many letters. I'm glad you took a pic og the sign - this sort of thing needs to be pinned down in a photo.
March 14th, 2012
How odd that they change your street name and number! (I used to live in a Bayview street- it's possible it once had a view of the bay, a very long time ago, but no such luck now!)
March 14th, 2012
Odd how place names and streets don't always reflect reality
March 14th, 2012
If I were you guys I would leave it there for posterity. That sign has so much character.
March 14th, 2012
@prttblues Thanks Bev!
@dmariewms Thanks Marie!
@alia_801 Thanks Alia!
@peterdegraaff Thanks Peter!
@sangwann Thanks Dione!

Thanks to all. The sign will probably stay. There's really no reason to take it down. People cannot read it as they drive by and we rarely use it when giving directions for that very reason! There are a lot of things about this region that are, shall we say, quirky! And the sign and street name reflect that. I truly think they named are street Island View as a joke. All the nearby streets have something to do with mountains and valleys. But in the end our funny little street name had to be changed to something a little more practical for a good reason- if I was in need of assistance, I certainly would want the police, ambulance or fire truck to be able to find me!

it gives kind of hope.. =).. nice picture..

@inertie Thank you Inertia!
March 14th, 2012
Interesting and, well, kinda fun. Nice shot.
March 15th, 2012
@netkonnexion Thanks Netkonnexion. If I'd been just a bit bolder and had a little more time this day, I might have walked around the corner and taken a shot of a sign our neighbor posted. It's a little kooky, but I don't know them and I'm not certain as to how well they'd take to a stranger standing on the street and shooting a picture of their sign. They're a little odd. Fine as neighbors, but hard to predict their reaction to that!

I love the rustic scene, sign, too. Great textures and composition.

@cimes1 Thank you Carole!
