Opaque or Transparent by olivetreeann

Opaque or Transparent

Yesterday while I was hiking along the Bushkill, I inadvertently stumbled in to a fallen branch. It hurt at the time, but I didn't think much of it. Today my ankle is bruised and swollen, so the trip I had planned to take to a local waterfall was out of the question! I managed to get some chores done around the house and decided to post a shot taken last week for today's Either Or October word- opaque. I always loved "milk glass". I find its soft milky white color and smooth surface very appealing. This piece was on display in the restaurant the women's group had their fall luncheon at. I thought the bumps and swirls made a nice gentle pattern which was quite appealing in black and white.
It's a beautiful piece Ann. We have several pieces packed away somewhere.

Sorry to hear about your accident. Hopefully it is only sprained.

I know milk glass very well. It shows perfectly against the black.

Oh dear, so sorry to hear about the fall. Hope nothing is broken but do stay off it and give it time to heal.

Lyn
this is stunning against the black, Ann. Please put that foot up and take care of yourself!

Very nice composition! Love the detail!

Sorry to hear about your accident; it's better to see a doctor you might need antibiotics. I hope you get well soon!

Ann I love it..a girlfriend of mine has quite a few items in milk glass and when I was at a flee market a few years ago I saw a matching picture frame, so I had to buy it for her as a present. as for your ankle you better put ice on it..when I bumped into something a short while ago it started swelling and after all this time it's still bigger than the ankle on my other foot. I had x-rays taken and was told it was ok and that the swelling will eventually subside.

Lovely composition and capture. Sorry about your accident. Please take care of yourself.
October 18th, 2012
I like the composition

What a pain about the ankle! You will have to stay at home and make coloured bubble drops?
October 18th, 2012
Great composition - sorry about your ankle...

@kerristephens Thanks Kerri!
@maggiemae Thank you Maggie!

Thank you everyone for your concern over the ankle. I can put my full weight on it and even walk with no trouble, so it's not sprained or broken. But it is sporting a nasty bruise and has some swelling, because I smacked it pretty good! So I have it raised, and I've been putting icy-hot on it to improve the circulation. It doesn't look pretty, but I think by tomorrow morning I'll see improvement. I think my time in the pool today also helped with the circulation so, it's on the mend. I truly appreciate all the good advice and well-wishes!

love the contrast of black and white, pattern and smooth
October 18th, 2012
Super composition and color!
October 18th, 2012
@pjonas Thanks Patty- it's doing pretty good, still swollen but I think by tomorrow it will start to go down.
@eniaral Thanks Laraine! Do you remember seeing this? It was on that shelf unit that divided the dining area from the chairs and coffee table for the guests of the B&B.
@httpgeffed Thanks Colleen!

that's a very sharp piece, lovely lines and curves - it looks dainty. that would be nice for a white-on-white shot. i hope your ankle's swelling will subside soon. in my first aid courses, we were told that an ice pack should be applied on the affected area immediately or during the next 24 hours. after that you would need to apply a hot pack. you should have it checked though if the swelling becomes worse.

@summerfield Thanks Vikki! It seems to be doing fine. I actually had both tonight with that icy-hot stuff. I'll be sleeping with it elevated tonight so we'll see in the morning how it worked.
October 18th, 2012
Beautiful artistic piece. Hope your ankle does improve tomorrow.
October 18th, 2012
@nadaa Thanks Nada- I'm sure it will! It's just sore and that's to be expected.
October 18th, 2012
Lovely composition! Hope your ankle mends quickly.
October 18th, 2012
Love the curving lines. Great lighting and composition! I hope your ankle is better.
October 18th, 2012
Pretty...thingy! (not sure what to call it!). You captured it beautifully - nice detail in the white, and contrasts well with the black background too :)
October 18th, 2012
Lovely capture. Love the contrasts and the design.
October 18th, 2012
Love this monochrome - it really brings out the bodacious curves in the vase!
Hope you've got your feet up. I always feel better when something hurts and you get a bruise to show for it, somehow I feel cheated if not. :)
October 18th, 2012
Delightful twist and curve in this one. Nicely composed.
October 18th, 2012
@salza Thank you Sally- yes, it's better this morning. Still tender, but I really whacked it good, so it will take a while for that to go away.
@myautofocuslife Thanks Livia. Yes, it seems to be healing as expected. It's going to have some "lovely" colors over the next few days though!
@alia_801 Thanks Alia! It's a candy dish I think (or maybe used for nuts or sugar cubes).
@sangwann Thank you Dione!
@filsie65 Thanks Phil! I put it up all last night and the swelling has gone down some. But it's going to produce some lovely shades over the next few days. I should probably add a little limp in so that people will really feel sorry for me! lol
@denisedaly Thank you Denise! That's what caught my eye about it in the first place.

Hope your ankle starts to behave soon! Wonderful lighting here.
October 18th, 2012
Oh Ann, sorry to hear about your ankle. Hope you feel better soon. This is a gorgeous shot. Love the light and the framing really enhances it.
October 18th, 2012
Beautiful glass and I love the way you composed this and the light shows of the shape perfectly. I hope your ankle will be better soon, so hard not to be able to do what you've had planned...

Bev
Rest that ankle and I hope you heal well and quickly! This is a great shot. I love the color, the way it's positioned, the framing. It's perfect. Excellent job.
October 18th, 2012
Like this, nicely framed.
October 18th, 2012
What a gorgeous piece of milk glass! It's a treasure. Beautiful pov and perfect in b&w. Take care of your ankle... that happened to me last year taking photos (hazards of our work!) Anyway ... long story short. My swelled up ankle never went down. Still the same today.
October 19th, 2012
@ruthmouch Thanks Ruth- it's still black and blue and a bit swollen today, but I went out for a (very) short hike anyway!
@anazad511 Thank you Ana! The ankle will heal in time- I'm being careful with it- but not letting it slow me down.
@geertje Thanks Geertje! I probably should have stayed off it today, but it wasn't hurting much when I walked so I took advantage of a beautiful day and took a very very short hike! I just wanted to get that waterfall shot!
@prttblues Thanks Bev! Well, it's only day two and it's still swollen a little, plus black and blue- but I didn't let it stop me today. Went out and got that waterfall shot!
@automaticslim Thanks Andy!
@karenann Thanks Karenann! It doesn't belong to me- it was on display at a restaurant, so it's not my treasure, but it was certainly pretty enough to take a photo before I left! The ankle is still swollen, but it only happened two days ago, so I'm not expecting it to look normal yet. lol I decided today was to beautiful to not be outside taking shots of the fall colors, so I took a very short hike to that waterfall!
October 19th, 2012
Sorry about my error, Ann. Now I see that it was taken at the luncheon .. my mind didn't "click" at the moment. lol But actually it's beautiful no matter where it was taken.
October 19th, 2012
hope you feel better! Lovely pic, esp. in b&w
October 19th, 2012
@karenann That's alright- I just thought I'd qualify it! But I agree- it was just a pretty piece.
@dmariewms Thanks Marie! I don't let it hold me back. I was off hiking again today!
October 19th, 2012
I have one just like this, belonged to my mom who always liked milk glass. Really nice shot! So sorry to hear about your accident, Ann. Take care of yourself!
October 20th, 2012
@cimes1 Thank you Carole! I'm doing fine- it was my own "klutziness"! The black and blue will be around for a while and the swelling is going down slowly, but it's not bothering me much and I can walk etc. so I'm not complaining!
October 20th, 2012
Very nice black or white, I think :-) Very nice off set :-)
October 20th, 2012
@vposey Thanks Vickie! It's basically a color shot converted to b/w and then the white of the candy dish was "painted back in for an extra boost.
October 21st, 2012
Beautiful dish....and hope that you get back on your feet.
October 21st, 2012
Great image. The white really stands out against the black.
October 21st, 2012
Cool natural B&W
October 21st, 2012
@mrssmith Thanks Carla! I'm up and running (although I should probably be taking it a little easier!)
@la_photographic Thank you Laura!
@tara11 Thank you Tara!
