In spite of my swollen, black and blue ankle, I got in the car and headed to that waterfall today. All your advice and admonitions were playing in my head as I walked along the Appalachian Trail in search of an Ooooooh or Ahhhhhh shot. In the end and after dabbling with the waterfall shot for way too long, I decided to post it on another day and put this one up instead. The sun streaming down on the Appalachin Trail was truly an Ooooooh shot when I first looked at it. The yellows, oranges and reds are really at peak now and the whole forest looked like someone had become overzealous with the earth tones. The temperature was perfect and when all the shots were tallied, I'd taken over 250 of them! All the more reason to say "Ahhhhhh" when I finally sat down in the car!
Cute commentary on your either or shot, Ann! I hope you didn't spend too much time on that ankle today. We walked on the Appalachian Trail a bit when we were in the Smokies a week or so ago...it makes one want to give it all up and start hiking!
@kerristephens Thank you Kerri! @maggiemae Thank you Maggie! It's a piece of American history to be sure. I've also walked on parts of it in Vermont. Just as lovely there as it is here! @sarasdadandmom Thanks Terry. Two things- it's covered with leaves right now, but also it's kept close to what it was like throughout our history- a natural path through the woods. I don't think I'd like it as much if it was flattened and "modernized". When I walk on it like this, I feel like I'm following in the footsteps of Native Americans, Early Americans, trappers, traders, explorers and more. It's not like walking through places with ancient histories and peoples but it is our heritage and a connection to our roots. @dmariewms Any time you want to visit Marie- you let me know! @lyno Thanks Lyn! Not too much- maybe a little more than I should have, but actually it doesn't look too bad tonight! It really is a gorgeous trail as far as sights go. I was hoping to get a nice shot of the Delaware Water Gap too, but I would have had to go further along the trail and I didn't want to push it. Some other time for that shot. @bkbinthecity Thank you Brian! Yes, it is. I've hiked a bit on it in Vermont too. It's just as pretty up there as it is here in Pennsylvania. @httpgeffed Thanks Colleen! I was singing while walking at one point (while taking pictures!) and another hiker came upon me. She just smiled and said, "You must be in a good mood!"
Ohhhh....how gorgeous this is! I can imagine how beautiful it looked on a day with perfect colors and cooperative weather. It makes me want to walk a part of that Trail. With a camera. A VERY light p&s! lol
I read about this trail in 'A walk in the woods' by Bill Bryson (which I loved), but have never seen a picture of any part of it. Looks wonderful and I can well understand the appeal of walking through any part of it. Wonderful autumn colours, and a great excuse to rest your foot again today!
Gorgeous Ann! I am so jelouse! i am heading back to P.A. on the 4th of Nov. Unfortunatly to late for the beautiful fall pics! But who know;s God knows my hearts desire..maybe he will save one tree just for me! :)
@salza Thanks Sally! I'm hoping that if not this fall, that I will revisit it in the Spring and walk a little further than I did this day. I know there are some beautiful overlooks that are further on from where I walked but I need to have a healthy ankle to get to them! @filsie65 Thanks Phil! That sounds like a good book. Well, now you've seen a little bit of the trail and it really is quite lovely. And yes, I stayed off my ankle today to balance out yesterday's hike. @ellimae Thanks Ellen- well, we're a bit higher in elevation than the western side of the state, so you might "luck out". @ruthmouch Thank you Ruth! @geertje Thank you Geertje! It did ok- but I pushed it a bit. @alia_801 Thank you Alia! @peterdegraaff Thank you Peter- well, I hope those wishes come true my friend!! @digitalrn Thanks Rick! I know you would enjoy walking and taking shots on this one! @nadaa Thanks Nada- this is almost across the river from where you took your pictures recently. The ankle is ok- still swollen a bit and still bruised, but it will be a while before that goes down. It doesn't hurt as much today though which is a good sign. @sangwann Thank you Dione!
@cimes1 Thank you Carole! Oh it's easy to shoot off that many. I also like to take multiple shots of some things playing with the light and shutter speed. Many shots get deleted later when I settle on the one I like best. I will also take a shot like this in both the vertical and horizontal format. All those things add up to a lot of pictures, but like I said, many end up deleted. Back in the days of film, I once read that a professional photographer would go through about 10 rolls of film before they got one shot to keep. That's always stuck with me and so I try to give myself plenty of room for that "one" shot.
No doubt that ankle is throbbing and should be elevated with ice on it. I think the pain we put ourselves through to get a nice photo for the day is worth it...sometimes. It depends on how badly I hurt the following day and then I see the number of peeks at my pic and think "nope, not worth the pain", but I know you don't have that problem! This is a lovely shot, Ann. You captured the Appalachians quite well! You do realize we share the same mountain range? Anyway, a job well done and I hope you are being kind to your foot!
Thank you both for your concern! I do not (nor have I ever really had) good balance- so my mishap was due to my own clumsiness. I'm ok now and no worse for the wear. I do have a huge (and ugly!) bruise, but that and the swelling are slowly going down.
Yes Bev- I know! I've hiked a little piece the AT in Vermont too.
@annaruth Thanks Anna! It's better today but still black and blue! @mrssmith Thanks Carla! It's healing as expected. @la_photographic Thank you Laura! @tara11 Thank you Tara! R- check; I- using Icy Hot at night; C- well...; E- check I guess 3 out of 4 isn't too bad! I do have some more places to go for pictures, but much flatter than this. I make sure I limit my time walking around but at this point, the ankle is ok. It's more black and blue than anything else at this point. Thanks for the good advice!

@karenann Thanks Karenann. If I ever get to go back with a DSLR, I'll do it!
Hope the ankle is better today.
