Photo of a Photo

My photo club is having a Scavenger Hunt competition. There are ten items on the list and you can only submit one photo per category. The photos cannot be processed in the computer or in your camera and only basic edits can be used in the camera or on the computer. One of the listings is a "photo of a photo" and this was not necessarily the first idea I had for that topic, but it was the first one I was able to shoot. I'm hoping I'll have time to run out and do my first idea. If I do, I post it here. Do you know how hard it was NOT to put a vignette and frame on this?!

This is a photo of my great, great grandmother. She's been featured here before...

lovely moment to capture and I like that you kept the vignette out of it. the golds and sepia tones are so warm, and speak of a warmth and kindness of your great great grandmother.

Very cool

What fun to have these family photos and know who everyone is! I have some but often don't know who they are. And I think the clarity on this is all you needed. No other framing necessary.

This is a wonderful image Ann and she looks like you

I like that you tilted it and include the book frame

Looks good!

Nice shot Ann, it's good to encourage people not to post process too. I think that natural sepia from your great grandmothers photo is perfect as is!

Very nice. To have restrictions placed on the processing can show us just how much we tend to rely on all the tweaks that we tend to always do!

Beautifully captured and composed - the background really adds to the overall pic.

Very pretty. Love the composition.

Love the tones in this and has a very vintage feel to it! Sounds like fun having a scavenger hunt competition as well! Just lovely x

Yes I do, it just feel "undone"

Instant fav! I absolutely love how you positioned this remarkable photo of your great grandmother. The hinges and details to the right fit so well. Beautifully done.

Very nice. The way you have positioned the old photo makes you feel like you're right there, looking through an old family album. Plus, I always like to see your old family pictures!

It's all in the placement of your picture and you seem to have a neck for it. fav.

Great shot, Ann! I bet not processing it was hard!! It's a great photo the way it is. I like how you put it at an angle. It shows the age of the photo and the age of the binder (?) it's in. Well done :)

PS - Bruni is right! You do look a lot like her!

@vankrey Thank you Michael!
@kerristephens Thank you Kerri!
@taffy Thank you Taffy!
@nicolecampbell Thank you Nicole!
@vickisfotos Thank you Vicki!
@paulavdmerwe Thank you Paula!
@thepinchins Thank you Pinchins!
@salza Thanks Sally! It's always tempting to overdo the processing and I think for the most part I keep it in check- but I do like finishing the edges off with a frame!
@alia_801 Thank you Alia!
@sangwann Thank you Dione!
@lilminimonka Thank you Brianna!
@digitalrn Thanks Rick! It feels slightly unfinished to me!
@cimes1 Thank you Carole and thank you so much for the fav!
@eudora Thank you so much Diane!
@bruni Thank you Bruni! And thank you so much for the fav!
@bkbinthecity Thank you Brian!
@prttblues Thank you Bev! It is actually inserted in a page of an old photo album that's probably as old as the picture! That's how it was given to me.
@pflaume Thank you Lisa! As I'm a newbie, I've never done this before but according to the former president, it's a popular competition. I'm glad they gave us to the end of May though because a couple of the items are going to be a bit tricky for me to get to!

Thank you everyone for all those great words of encouragement. I do enjoy challenges that force me to change things up a bit and I'm seeing this as having a positive effect on my composition so far. It's forcing me to be aware of what's at the edges of my picture and how the subject is framed within the picture.

I like her expression as she looks intelligent alert and interested :)

@potsbypam Thank you Pam! I wish now that I could have learned more about her from my grandmother when she gave me the picture. I have a feeling she had a fun sense of humor.
April 10th, 2014
you mean, as in NO processing? :-) that's about how withdrawal feels, methinks. that photo is awesome.
April 10th, 2014
Great still life shot. Your great grandmother was beautiful.
April 10th, 2014
@summerfield Thanks Vikki- yes, NO processing! That's the biggest challenge of them all for me and my P & S! We are allowed to adjust contrast, MINOR cropping and if the shot is in color we are allowed to tweak the saturation, but all in all, the pictures are supposed to be as sooc as possible. Part of me wishes I could haul out the 35mm and use that but it's a digital competition. So I come into the competition with a SLIGHT disadvantage as my camera has so many presets I can't alter- but as you know- I have learned what my camera can and can't do and I think I will do well in spite of the fact that I can't really adjust the camera as much as those with better cameras can. My strength is and always has been in composition, so I will use that to my advantage and see what happens. I feel I have as good a chance to win a category as anybody else does at this point. But realistically I don't think I'll win the whole thing.

@daisymiller Thank you Daisy!

@olivetreeann - and here i am with all my gears yet thinking i'm not good enough to compete. but i concede to the fact that your greatest tool is your artistry in composition, you have a quick eye to match the quick mind. and as i always say and believe, it's more the photographer than the camera. and if there's anyone here i would like to see succeed with this photography thing, it's you. so i think it's about time we meet so i can lend you one of my cameras and you can start kicking ass...i mean you can start winning the whole thing. :-) let's go!
April 10th, 2014
@summerfield I can't wait to meet you- we are supposed to be heading to Batavia soon and I'm just waiting to see what Jeff is really thinking as to how long we will be staying. In our favor is the fact that our son is doing some remodeling and could really use his dad's help. Plus my birthday is also coming up and maybe I could persuade him to make a longer stay my birthday gift. I must get on renewing that passport asap!!
April 11th, 2014
Your great grandmother was beautiful woman!
