Into the Depths

Our photo club met up today for a tour of Lost River Caverns. Most of us had not been there and we thoroughly enjoyed our tour guide's informative and entertaining narrative. It's still hard to believe we were that deep under the earth's surface.
Very interest. Looks captivating. I've been inside these type caverns before, but it was before I took pictures. In face, if member serves me correctly, we were forbidden to take pictures.

Great shot of this cavern. I have never done this. Not sure if I would enjoy being so far under the earth's surface.

Love investigating caves just as long as there are no very narrow passages to negotiate. I like the atmosphere here

I cant quite work out what is going on, but I do love the effect in the top right corner. I guess this would have been very difficult to photograph. Really like the shine to it.

Thank you Henri, Connie, Babs, Nicole, Allie, k1w1, Lou Ann, Sally, Brian, Katy, Kim, Ferry, Rob and Helen! Thanks for the views and comments- which are always great to read!

I know that some caves can be quite cramped but this one was very easy to navigate through and does not have anybody (i. e. bats!) living in it so it's actually quite nice. There was lighting so that you could see your way through the passages, and that's what you see in the upper right corner Helen-one of the "wall lights" which is aimed upwards to highlight the small stalactites in that part. They are hidden from view here, but the light isn't. The lighting was good- not perfect for capturing every detail, but giving you a feel of the caverns. The temp was a nice 52 degrees F, so it was very comfortable and you never felt closed in.

Some places allow photography and some don't- it depends on what type of stone has formed the cavern, what life (if any) is there and such. We were not allowed to use tripods or monopods, but you could use flash. I think that was more for commercial reasons than environmental. Some of my fellow photographers did use their flash, but I don't like working with it, so I determined ahead of time that I was going to approach the photography here with abstracts in mind. The lighting however gave me opportunity to photograph some of the passageways and caves at 400 ISO, which also allowed me to hand-hold the camera without much of a shake.

I don't remember which photographer I was reading, but one of them said that if you go into a situation expecting perfect lighting, perfect weather, etc. you will always be disappointed. So it is best to work with what you see- and I've applied that to a lot of situations. It worked to my advantage here!
