Rind — with apologies to Escher [Filler]

Sitting on the counter retaining its mostly-spherical shape, this clementine peel reminded me of M.C. Escher’s work, “Rind” (and, by extension, “Bond of Union”).

It seems I am occasionally using these photographs/posts as an excuse or impetus to “look up” stuff. This time I found this piece on Escher’s “Rind” (which was inspired by H.G. Wells’s The Invisible Man).

Wow — how many of Escher’s works are instantly familiar…

@marlboromaam If only I had such photo-editing skills!
Alas, speaking of photo-editing, I am at a decision-point. I have been using Photoshop v. 7 (©2002), installed via CDs. (To install the v. 7 upgrade, I have to insert the install CD for version 6!) But we are transitioning to a new laptop … which does not have a CD/DVD drive. I don’t want to pay $21/month for Photoshop, so I don’t know what to do…

@rhoing Oiy! That's a bad rub. Are you sure you don't want a desktop? And will the version 7 upgrade work on a newer operating system? I don't know what to tell you and I wish I did. When I get my new iMac in a couple of more months (if nothing else breaks down on me) I will NOT be paying for a monthly subscription for Photoshop. Hopefully my old iMac will still function with my old Photoshop and it will be entirely offline. Have you looked at On1-Raw? I've been using On1 since 2011 in addition to Photoshop. You can still buy On1 outright with so many free upgrades, etc. just like Photoshop used to do. https://www.on1.com/products/photo-raw/ You can own it outright for $80 right now on sale. Plus there's all kinds of freebies and stuff. Take a look and let me know what you think. I'm still using On1-10 because my old iMac won't update to the newer On1-Raw.

@marlboromaam Haven't had a desktop in years and yes, we're sure we don't want a desktop.

The free Microsoft Windows app ("Paint") is just awful; I gave up trying to edit a PrtScr capture yesterday.

Paint Shop Pro is the only other app I've used. Unaware of On1; will definitely check it out.

Another option is to buy a USB CD drive and install my ancient copy of PS from the CDs. The drive would probably pay for itself in less than 6 months, *assuming* the ©2002 software would run on Windows 11. I see that Photoshop Lightroom, with 1Tb of storage, is only $10/month. That's a whole lot better than $21/month.

Subscription-based software seems to be the norm or the trend, but I will check out On1 — thanks!

Why is it "On1 RAW"? I assume you can edit .jpg files, but does RAW indicate that it will load, and save to, the RAW file format?

@rhoing As far as I know, it will work with jpeg and raw images. Just check out the link and explore it. You can download the trial version and give it a try. From what I've seen, it will do more than Photoshop to sharpen images, and much more. Let me know!

@marlboromaam Here's where the conversation started! I was going through the rest of 2022 — now that I've filled in May — and found this post and our conversation in the comments. Thanks again for steering me to ON1!

@rhoing LOL! You are so welcome. Do you think they've resolved the date/time issue yet? I haven't been paying attention.

@marlboromaam They have *not* resolved the capture-time issue as far as I know. I've also discovered that if you do an Export with Preset, *that* seems to kill the meta data about the camera *and* it completely kills the date. So edit a photo taken a month ago, export with a preset, upload to 365 and 365 will find no date info and use today's date.

@rhoing Okay. I'm not exporting with Preset, so I guess I'm good. It will save a preset file with a regular export. I save the original and the edited copy, then delete the preset file since I have no need to keep it.
