"flying refined" ready to touch down

glorious day today in toronto, albeit on the very warm side. in the early evening after i left our office, i decided to capture more landing airplanes at the waterfront. toronto has an island airport that serves the downtown/financial district people. porter airlines operates from this island airport with their very quiet fleet of planes.

this airline's slogan is "flying refined" and if you would have the opportunity to fly this airline, you would know why. wide seats, more leg room, free drinks and food (that are actually not only edible but delicious as well) and the hospitality is superb. if you're old enough you might remember those flight attendants of the sixties with their tailored uniforms and pillbox hats. no attitude at all. plus the lounge is like first class, well, it's first class, even if you pay the economy fare.

enough promotion of the airline!

i wanted a shot of the plane overhead with the sailboats on the water. in fact, i'm not too happy with this because i would've wanted the plane to be a tad lower but believe me, i took over 200 shots and this is the closest i could get. when they're too close to the water it means they're touching the runway within seconds.

also, the sailboats are out in full force with the beautiful wind that came along with the sunshine. i'd hate for summer to end, but have you noticed that the days are getting shorter? :-)
I know what you went through to get this. I frequently wil target an airplane but always get too much space between it and whatever I want it to look close to. It always looks close with the eye but the camera puts that extra space in there! Yes the daylight hours are getting shorter.

Such a pretty shot of the activity in and around Toronto/Lake Ontario. A trip by plane or boat sounds attractive - haven't been on either recently. Since you finished the CN Tower theme, you've sure captured some variety! Well done.

Great shot. We have a City Centre Airport that I walk by quite often. One of these days I will have to go and take the time to try and capture a shot like this

Great catch! Nice airline slogan too. Reminds me of Asian Spirit airlines, after a number of unfortunate flights, people began labeling them with slogan that says "You'll fly without Spirit" lol. The airline changed planes and changed their name eventually and besides they can't compete with PAL and Cebu Pacific. =)

Nice shot- was thinking yesterday that a transportation theme would be fun.

beautiful shot. as a teen in rhode island, i would go with a friend to a county airport and stretch out at the end of the runway - the little planes took off right over us. soooo exciting. we could only stay for two and then had to run like hell back through the woods before we got caught. i never thought to take a camera! wish i had, they were glorious and i am not so brave now and i am sure no one can get there these days.

I want to fly with them!!!!!!! You talked me into it! Love the water aspect to the shot -- as well as the sailboats! Don't see those all together (the airplane with the water and sailboats, you know what I mean!!) Very cool! love it!

@pamfromcalgary - thanks, pam. i also need to learn how to use the camera. it was acting up yesterday. i'm sure there are buttons or functions to choose and i'm not doing it right.
@sunnygreenwood - kinda difficult without a theme or a purpose but that stirs the creativity pot more, i should think. thanks, anne. @bkbinthecity - yes! i'd like to see it, too! thanks.
@steeler - thanks, howard. are you back home now? you sure enjoyed your trip, didn't you?
@altadc - thanks for the tip off about spirit! i'll probably fly tibu patipik because it's much cheaper that pal. thanks, alta.
@jannkc - well, shall we do transportation next week? are you going to post it on the discussion board or we'll keep it to ourselves here?

@catsmeowb - that was awesome! i'm thinking one of these days, i'll go near the toronto international airport, the planes when landing look like they're going to touch the houses' roofs. i'd like to catch one crossing the highway, that'd be awesome. and no, these days, you can't even go inside an airport without a ticket. i guess i could swim around the toronto island airport to do that. want to come with me? hehehe! thanks, camille.

@cscecil - i'll try for airplane, boats and a truck next time. too bad, the train station is way inland and i can't incorporate it. i think i also have planes with a sailboat, a ferry and a speedboat. i would have to scan through the shots i took last night. thanks, CS. coming to toronto yet? :-)

@summerfield I was in Toronto once -- in about 1984. I loved it -- definitely want to go back!!

@cscecil - that's a long time ago. time to come back for another visit!

I live beside the airport so I'd like to contest your "quiet" flights (they rev their engines in the middle of the night among other things), but you're definitely not alone in loving the airline.

It must have been a hard angle to get all the sailboats in the shot along with the plane considering where you must have been standing. You're very patient to take 200 photos to get one just right!
I have a view of the lake with all the sailboats in the inner harbour and it is a lovely sight.

great capture...and incredibly patient to keep on trying for the shot.

@bohemianme - "quiet" as in i hear the gardiner more than the planes. i've missed too many shots because i could never know when they're coming or going.

when i was young, until i was a teenager, the sound of airplanes scared me like hell. it didn't help that we lived near the airport, too. some quack doctor believed i lived during the war because that's what happened in my dreams, airplanes dropping bombs. it went away, eventually.

@patticake - thank you, patti. i guess when you really want something, you just gotta do it, patiently, preferably.
