easy riders

here's another one for the steeler!

a few months ago, we discovered a new sunday breakfast haunt about five kilometres northwest of where we live. it is an old diner that still serves those artery clogging breakfast of old. the smell of bacon frying in its own fat is not as bad as other restaurants. it's an old diner that has refurbished its looks but refuses to modernize its menu and not in the least apologetic about it, although they do ask you if you want white or brown toast with your order.

there is a group of men well beyond their sixties, about nine of them, who would come in early, order their cholesterol laden breakfast of sunny-side up eggs, hash and bacon, and talk about their daily rides, the views, their cars and just the bikes generally, like an informal club or committee. a young man would join them, always belatedly, and would always get the comment from the oldest guy "we were going to leave without you, you're late again!" to which the young man, about 28-30, would just smile and shake his head and brush off the sleep in his face as he orders the same breakfast.

partner and i would sit at a corner table by the window and i'd be snapping pictures of cars going by or people walking by, which always turn out bad anyway because the position is such that i am facing the morning sun and the glass windows get reflections of all kinds.

this time, after we ate, i was taking shots of these bikes, trying to get the best angle, when i decided to look back at the restaurant to see if the guys were looking. got them! they were all gawking by the window, some half standing. they smiled, rather awkwardly, and i held up my hand and gave them the 'peace' sign and they reluctantly made the sign, too. then i continued to shoot the bikes.

day 2 of the black and white week of the "five weeks in may challenge". i'm still alive! the coloured shot, if you are interested, can be viewed here: http://one-photograph-a-day.blogspot.ca/
Great story and cool image. I cant resist a bike shot. @steeler Howard will love this.

love your narrative, but i always do! got my computer fixed - turned out it was the cord - what a simple issue but not one i even thought of but caused major problems as it was breaking. thought of everything else EXCEPT that. then the plug fell off. duh. so happy!

good shot and interesting story!

This would be fascinating even without the picture. I could see it from your words alone and yet here is this strong lovely shot as a bonus

Great story and good shot in black and white. It is difficult to shoot through glass.

@noo - thank you, denise. i can picture him doing the happy dance.

@steeler - are you doing the happy dance yet? been harping over black and white and my not being a fan of it and so fate's punishing me with six days of black and white. but you know, howard, i had thought that if i had to shoot in black and white, i might as well make someone happy for doing so. thank you.

@sarasdadandmom - thank you, terry. :-) guess what i saw today? it made me laugh and i've been smiling the whole day.

@catsmeowb - you mean the cord was simply loose and you just had to re-connect? or you needed a new cord? but that's great, the important thing is you're connected. so let's do the happy dance with howard then! thank you, camille.

@pamfromcalgary - thank you, pam. this was actually taken when i was already outside and that's when i looked back at the men through the window. in bright sunshine, through the glass, this would not have come out well. :-)

@cscecil - thank you, CS. you're so kind.

Nice view of their bikes, and fun story about the bikers :)

@summerfield HAHA- no, where it plugs into the computer, the little thingy fell off into my hand. last week i told malcolm one of the other plugs - i thought i was one of the fishtanks - was snapping. guess it was my computer. mine kept shutting down in the middle of stuff, saying i needed a new driver or to download different stuff or would just do stuff for me. was making me crazy. i knew i didn't need that driver. funny how we think "new" and forget to check "old" - if you know what i mean. should have kept it simple and would have solved this weeks ago. yes, very happy dancing here, thank you!

@catsmeowb - happened to me once, i called the service provider. the first thing they ask you is "can you please check that the plug is properly inserted." and i went around my table and i just said on the phone "ooopsy!" and we both laughed.

Nice take. I love motorbikes. I had 13 over the years. Great shot. Nice narrative. Thanks for sharing.
May 9th, 2012
@netkonnexion - thirteen bikes! when did you start, when you were five?!? thank you, damon.
May 10th, 2012
Well, see- it's not so hard for you to do black and white! But three of those bikes, don't really look like BIKES- at least not Harley/Gold Wing kind of bikes!! lol
May 13th, 2012
@olivetreeann - hahaha! to me they're all motorcycles. thank you, ann. taking lack and white photos is a matter of taste, i suppose. although i must admit it made me give a lot of thoughts over my shots and subject, even with the obvious. acquired a new perspective, i suppose. thank you.
May 15th, 2012
@summerfield Glad it's been a true challenge and one you've enjoyed.
May 16th, 2012
Great story to fit the photo. I miss those days, just sitting and watching people. Great perspective on the shot.
