@olivetreeann - ann, i'll tell you a secret: it so does. but you have to make sure you set the ISO or you end up with a thousand just plain black photos. hahahaha! i have gotten away with not checking my shots. i was quite upset when i checked and all i had was black frames. so i had to crank the ISO, of course just like sunset and sunrise, no two smoke shots are alike. drat! you have a date yet for batavia?
@summerfield Leigh will be turning 6 on October 26, so it looks like it might be that weekend. If Jeff is working, just I will come up and I can stay as long as I like (poor kids!), but if Jeff comes it will probably be a very short weekend if he's still working. I will know better mid-October. Which reminds me I have to look into getting my passport renewed- I think it expired!
I tried this for the first time today and have a way to go before I get something like this! It's fabulous! So simple but as I imagined, the effect has quite an impact! I didn't put mine in my main album as I wasn't that happy with them. Would you mind sharing what source of smoke you used, what source of light? My photo is much less dramatic hehehee! :)
@sarajeal - :-) i use an incense stick, lemon vanilla flavour. you need to have a very black background. you also need a table lamp. you direct the light from the table lamp onto the smoke. make sure no light hits the background. it is ideal to have a remote flash gun, but if you don't that's okay, too. i don't have one so i didn't use one :-) but if you do have a flash gun, you set it on manual, 1/2 power and a zoom of 105 mm.
then you set your camera to manual, aperture F11 and a shutter speed of 1/160. then you light the incense, blow the flame. then fire away!
so basically, the only thing i don't have is the flash gun. i think i should plan on getting one. good luck.
@summerfield thanks so much for sharing ....I used an incense stick too, with a black background, no flash gun either :) I think I need to move the incense stick further away from the background which is a little difficult in my tiny utility room where I'm setting up the light studio.....but you've inspired me to try again tomorrow....will let you know how I get on :)
@sarajeal - my incense stick was about a foot away from the background. aim the table lamp at the smoke. i also cranked my ISO to 3200 i think. just keep on trying and you'll get it in no time.
@vikkigm - thank you, vikki. just try the method i described above. i saw a video once on how to do this, really simple, and you can do it even with a point and shoot.
@summerfield I may take you up on that offer! I have done some water crowns in the past and will be posting again today. I will see how easily I can get hold of some incense sticks.
Was smoke the push? Are crowns part of the push also? I'm so confuuuused!LOL Cool smoke shot. I haven't done that. Haven't gotten a real crown either :-)
@bill_fe - in the culture i was raised, a man winking at a woman means more than just winking, i.e. there's more than interest in there.but what i understood from an early age was if you keep on winking it means you have a 'nerve' problem. bahahahahahaha! and fallopian tube is spelled with a double 'l' dagnabits!
then you set your camera to manual, aperture F11 and a shutter speed of 1/160. then you light the incense, blow the flame. then fire away!
so basically, the only thing i don't have is the flash gun. i think i should plan on getting one. good luck.
@henrir - thank you, henri.
@claireuk - thank you, claire.
