Filling in some gaps from the Greece trip. This was from Mount Lycabettus, same place as the view of Athens at night that made it to TT. Taken earlier (obviously), what I liked about this one is you can see the ruins of the Zeus temple (had over 100 columns at one point -- these are all that are left) and if you look just up and beyond the ruins, to the left, you can see the Panathinaiko Olympic stadium (made entirely of marble) where the opening and closing ceremonies were held about a decade ago. It's huge and nestled between the two hillsides. To the left of the Zeus temple and down a tad is Hadrian's Arch (will need to view as large as possible to find it). What surprised me about Athens, despite reading about it before we left, is how these amazing historical sites are in the midst of urban sprawl.
beautiful! and yes - i felt the same way about Rome... you'd be meandering around what seems to be a typical European city, turn the corner and boom - ancient ruins... just THERE!
Fabulous view. I just love Athens. As you say lots of historical sites in the midst of urban sprawl. It was the same when we lived in Cyprus. We could be walking along a beach and come across a Roman tombstone, or a goat pen with an ancient statue in it to be used as a scratching post for the goats. Amazing.
