Greece Photo Day 1. Athens is a huge sprawling city. Going to the top of one of the hills created, according to at least one myth, by Athena hearing some bad news from a raven and dropping a huge rock as a result. The rock became this high physical point in the city, probably at least as high as where the Acropolis stands. From there, it was fun taking sunset shots on a day with both mountains and the right kind of clouds to add interest. It reminds me a bit of looking west in Chicago from our current apartment -- only we don't have mountains to block our view into the distance (ah...envy, if only we had mountains).
We leave for Crete early in the morning and I just finished downloading the rest of the photos from Athens, so must pack, clean up, and get some sleep. Comments to come -- sometime but not sure when. Thanks for staying with me despite my lack of response for a bit!
This is just gorgeous - the clouds and setting sun, of course, steals the show, but the flat city forms a great foreground. The choice of height for your horizon must have been full of conflict....
This picture made me think that this must be the view for the Gods when they look down onto Earth from Mount Olympus. And you are actually also very right about similarities with your shots of Chicago from above, especially one of the last one with the sunset!
I'll have to share this with the boy. He's a big fan of Greek mythology and will, surely, absolutely love this! (Of course, it will also mean that he'll want to see it - all the more - in person!) Have been thinking of you on your trip and am glad to see some of your photos. Hope the professional/business end of things goes well, too!
Stunning. Have a great time in Crete. My first husband and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary and until his death he delighted in telling people how I'd fallen at Knossos, on our trip down the Samaria gorge and looking at the dolphin murals...he always paused then, grinned and said he'd had to stop me drinking any more raki! As if I would!
Wonderful sunset sky over Athens.....that sure is the view that the Gods up at Olympus would have had of us mere mortals down below! Now, if only they had a camera in their hands to record it for posterity!! You picked one of the best vantage points, and a beautiful evening to get this shot....FAV for sure!
Oh, @ceilidh Margaret, you must have visited Turkey before going to Crete, and must have imbibed of the "fire liquid" there....same thing, they just call it ouzo in Greece!
@panthora Thanks for the visits and comments, Osia! I'm sitting in the hotel cafe looking over the 'new' harbor with the sun shining. It has been lovely here and we've been hosted so well. We were given a detailed tour of Knosos -- the palace and the museum, and have explored the old town here in Rethymno. A faculty member from Chania is taking us there this afternoon after the conference ends. We haven't been able to explore the mountains or gorge area, but at least have a feel for the rich history here. I'm already looking forward to coming back here with Jim!
How beautiful is this? Athens!!! So envious of your travels. My sister-in-law and her husband just got back from there. This is really an amazing shot Taffy! Mega FAV
