Rare Yellow Beach Flower Named Something-or-Other

We love having this flower all over our area of the beach. People come down to look at it, as it's apparently quite rare and a protected species. We should know what it is. But every year, Jim and I have the same boring conversation that goes pretty much like this...
Jim: the yellow flowers look great on the beach
Taffy: lighting is good -- how long do I have til dinner's ready
Jim: enough time, but hurry
Taffy (returning with photos and showing Jim): what do you think?
Jim: looks good
Taffy: darn..do you remember the name of this flower?
Jim: mmmm...no, can't remember...Ruth (our master gardner neighbor) knows

So if anyone really wants to know, I can get the answer tomorrow! Thanks for such kind comments on yesterday's Lake Michigan shot which briefly visited PP today.

@maggiemae has confirmed -- it's a 'hairy puccoon' -- mystery solved! My master gardner friend, Ruth, also was right. Now I can come back to this photo when we forget next year!

For a more encompassing scene of the beach, see extras album... http://365project.org/taffy/the-also-ran-ph/2015-06-22

We have yellow flowers similar to this one in Virginia Beach... actually in Norfolk on the Chesapeake Bay. Nice image!

Lovely light and shadow Taffy! I have no idea what it is. It is not a plant I have seen on a beach.

Pretty light, but is that a dead creature to the left? Looks like a claw
June 23rd, 2015
Great composition. I think that the Latin name for this species is called Idunno whatitis....

This is lovely - nice shadow too!
June 23rd, 2015
It is a very pretty flower and quite hardy if it's able to grow on the beach.

Love the light and shadows
June 23rd, 2015
Very pretty, I bet they look lovely filling the beaches.

Hehe...love the conversation. And the picture of the flower! Lovely colour and shadows, Love Shepherdmans identification. That'll do for me!

Pretty flower, did you tell Jim you also photographed the birches.
June 23rd, 2015
Very pretty shot and flower. The shadow is wonderful. Great narrative - lol.

Fantastic macro.

Lovely capture (really like that shadow) And i love your title (that's mostly what I call all flowers!)
June 23rd, 2015
Beautiful capture
June 23rd, 2015
Wonderful - and great shadow !

What a beautiful flower. Love how you captured it and the shadow too. You sound like my husband and me when it comes to photos. Our husbands sure are patient. I follow someone in Holland who knows a ton about flowers just in case you cannot find out the name.

The news shows tornadoes and then flooding coming in Chicago. I hope your places are safe and you are out of the line of this weather. My sister has been there for weeks on business and 45 minutes from 5 tornadoes. So grateful but concerned about those affected. Take care. FAV for your photo.

Lovely capture of the un-named yellow flower. ;-) like the story more! They at least have names. Chuckling.......
June 23rd, 2015
What ever it is - it's great!
June 23rd, 2015
Adorable... I can never remember their names! I like the tightly packed little yellow blossoms. Very pretty.
June 23rd, 2015
Love your narrative! Beautiful yellow color!
June 23rd, 2015
@shepherdman LOVE LOVE LOVE the name!!!! Brilliant!!!!
June 23rd, 2015
Love the light and shadow in this . Pretty 'no name' flower
June 23rd, 2015
Ok- for all the talk about what it's name is (and even though Shepherdman's name was brilliant), after spending 15 minutes of fruitless searching I finally landed on a sight and I think it is.... Michigan Monkey Flower! How can you forget a name like that? But wouldn't you know- I forgot to save the link!!!!!

Fifth picture down. The leaves don't look the same, but everything else matches its description as far as I can tell. But even if I'm wrong at least you have a place you can email your picture to and they'll tell you what it is. But your expert is probably quicker! Then edit your title so that the name will always be here. Very pretty!

So - I gather from this descriptive comment that Jim makes the dinner! Lucky you! I googled this flower finding this sort of thing a challenge but could not identify it! @shepherdman 's botannical name is the best, i reckon! It has 5 petals and sort of a hollow in the middle!
June 23rd, 2015
Pretty flower and shot. I like the colours and shadows in this.

@maggiemae I used to cook a lot but he's better at it than me and also pickier. So over the years it's evolved into his being in charge of meals (with me as helper) or if I cook, it's now one of a few thing that I do -- I prefer lighter meals like salads so when I'm in charge, that's what we get, but I can do a great poached salmon!
June 24th, 2015
Beautiful capture. I love the light, cool, shadow
June 24th, 2015
Doesn't look like west coast monkey flower
June 24th, 2015
Outstanding! No guesses here... :-)
Beach Beauty...
love your yearly conversation! Made me :-)
June 24th, 2015
Great detail and brilliant colour.
June 24th, 2015
Pretty flower, and also sounds a fair bit like me and mine with the cooking and the photography. I know a bit more than him about the names of things but he comes up with some cool names of his own.
June 24th, 2015
LoL! Loved reading the annual commentary on this little flower. Such a pretty little thing. It'll be interesting to find out what it's name is.
June 24th, 2015
So, it's a "hairy puccoon", huh?! Working my way back through your photos is like reading a book backwards....the suspense is ruined! ;-))
