In 1999, Chicago debuted an idea that started in Switzerland the year before -- "Cows on Parade" -- where local artists paint, decorate, and dress fiberglass cows. They are then on display for several months and finally auctioned off as a fundraiser. In the subsequent 2 decades, there have been dogs, horses, sofas, and others 'on parade' in cities across the world. This is an original cow from 1999, who now lives in the lobby of the newest addition to the Chicago Board of Trade. From my photowalk CAF tour with @ukandie1
Such a fun photo Taffy. I wonder what he thinks of his home - it's so super modern. :) P.S. Love these cows whenever they turn up. We know have similar Koalas appearing in lots of places.
Such a great image with the cow against the lines of the architecture. I think we saw a yellow cow when I was there the first time - he was down near the Butterfly House and he had a raincoat on. Very funny!
Don't think he'll find much grass to eat in there though! I remember the first time I went to Milton Keynes and saw the concrete cows on the roundabout. I always think of that whenever I see a cow statue now! Fish eye suits this.
He looks like he's found a good home.
We had the same idea with superlambananas (I'll post one next week!) in Liverpool when the city was European capital of culture in 2008. They did a trail so you could visit them all, just to add a bit of interest they put one at the top of a mountain in Wales and a few other places outside the city that had some connection with Liverpool. It's a great idea and it raised lots of money for charity.
Looking very good in his forever home - certainly in the photograph. We have had plenty of these parades with different animals in England, but I do believe Milton Keynes may have just started this whole thing off with it's concrete cows that were placed in a field seen from the fast train to London. They were created in 1978
@helenhall@louannwarren Hi Lou Ann -- according to the website, it started in Switzerland in 1998, but according to Helen Jane, the idea may go back to 1978 in England. I'm guessing by now, there are any number of potential sources of the idea!
Lots of these Random Acts of Art variations going around- each one unique and fun. Seems like a trade center is a good place for a bull to be. Good shot!
Marilyn Moo-nroe is right across the street from my office ;-P
