When Rachel @rawrs1009 gave me my challenge this week, street scenes, I was stumped, as Beaver Island does not have a lot of street action. I actually had a photo of a long empty road through the forest as my backup option! But then, duh, I realized this week includes the 4th of July celebrations for independence day (or the USA's birthday)! Today was the parade and there was a LOT of street action. I decided to do a collage to capture the festivity. No artistic merit, but another window into life on Beaver Island in the summer.
The photos include the Beaver Island mascot in the top left with the Emerald Isle ferry behind him, parade scenes ("Uncle Sam" on stilts, a musical quartet on a forklift, a pickup truck decked out in flags, the Biological Research Station's float, and viewers on the back of their pickup truck.
The parade takes about 30 minutes going up Main Street, then gets to the end, turns around, and comes back to repeat the whole thing. I hope this fits the challenge, Rachel.
Wonderful collage showing just how much fun you had! I agree with Ann @olivetreeann Beaver Island definitely looks like the place to spend your summer holidays! All your photos are a wonderful advert for Beaver Island! Fav!
Rick and I watched the parade on Jeff's webcam - your photos are even better at capturing the feel of it all! Good work! Yes - can you believe the forklift band? Was Ritchie driving that?
Yep -- that was Richie! Thanks Janine! I'm working on the fireworks ones now. They were good tonite and I watched from next to the water sports rental place -- on their deck in fact. It was a fun day -- wish you both could have been here with us! More to come! And I'm enjoying seeing your photos appear now and then!
@jyokota Maybe next year? @susale This is more how a very very small town celebrates. In a lot of places the parades are more elaborate and in some ways, less personal. It's fun to celebrate here each summer. @annied@colie Thanks Annie and Colie!
