Thank you for all your positive thoughts as clearly they are making a difference in the positive energy here. Main positive thing #1 is in my main album -- a very competent new contractor who has shown us he knows how to handle a job like ours. Even though the house will need to be gutted, it's safe, clean, and dry again. The positive thing #2 is receiving keys to our temporary condo and going to "visit" it tonight to see what it looked like after dark. This is the living room -- furniture to arrive Monday -- and as you can see, the view is fantastic.
Things are looking up -- a long road ahead, I know, and as things improved today, the magnitude of our loss is starting to sink in. But we will be okay. Now, if only Danbo would come home. I took P3 and Little Danbo with me tonight to have a look, but none of the photos with them turned out. Next time...
Wow! I'm just catching up with what has been going on in your life! I'm glad things are going in the right direction! That view is amazing! Keeping you in my thoughts, Taffy!
Wow that's some view Taffy! I know that once you are living there with your new furniture and hopefully all your clothes you will feel so much better! I warned you about delayed shock and it sounds like you have been so busy trying to sort things out that you haven't really come to terms with the whole event and especially the "what ifs"! It all sounds so much more positive with your new contractor - long may it last! You will soon be settled in your new home and from this look at it I think you are going to enjoy it! Take care - keep safe.
Wow what a view and I am glad some positive things are happening for you Taffy. Just think of all those amazing shots you can show us from your living room.
Wonderful view, the space looks terrific already even without any furniture in it, and you will make it home in no time at all! So glad things are looking up for you.
Wowzer. I am so conflicted when it comes to living spaces. Part of me absolutely loves cityscapes, but part of me loves to see trees and water as well. All I can think is that one day the "perfect" home that covers everything is going to cost me a flipping fortune.
Lots of positive karma here. What a view! Glad to hear you have a competent contractor. Hang in there and take things one day at a time so you don't feel overwhelmed. You are in my thoughts and everything is going to be fine!
So glad your new home looks great, Wow what a view! You are still being so positive and I'm glad you have a good contractor that will make such a difference.
What a stunning view. Glad things are progressing. I started off life in a house, lived half my life in apartments, and now own a house again. Oddly, I find that I prefer apartments, especially in populated urban areas.
I appear to be the only one who has a hot flush at 34 at the thought of my living room being so high up..... Very glad you are pleased by the view!! I hope though temporary this home will feel like that for you. A home for a short period of time. A home that gives what homes should. A place to rest, be restored, to be with loved ones, to sleep and eat. May this place be that for you taffy as your home is rebuilt for you.
Well that is a spectacular view! It won't replace all the special things that were damaged, but it will help to make moving forward an adventure! You remain in my thoughts and prayers over the little details and things that were special to be recovered as best as possible.
looks like lovely space and fabulous view! something to play with for a few months? i can only imagine the logistical challenges you're dealing with right now... and yes, i think you will need to mourn the little losses... things like the giraffe... only "things" perhaps, but still part of you that is now gone... wishing you lots of strength over the next little while...
I was on my way out of Chicago to the western burbs at about this time. My view was not NEARLY as beautiful. Glad to know all your hard work at pushing things forward are paying off. I agree with Margaret, @ceilidh, however, that, when things settle for you a tad, a whole new slew of stuff could make itself known. *fingers crossed for Danbo*
What a wonderful view you'll have while your home is being rebuilt. I'm lost in admiration for the way you're handling this whole disaster, especially while still working, shooting and posting!! Wotta woman!!
@eyesmile Thanks Gena! We'll be there til our condo is rebuilt. We've gotten estimates from 4 months to over 6 months. We have a one year contract that has a clause that we can leave with 30 days notice after 6 months, so I'm guessing we'll be here at least until then. If ours somehow is ready that much earlier, as long as he rents it, we can easily leave. The insurance company is handling all of it, so whatever happens, we should be okay. My sister-in-law was teasing that we will hope our contract is not efficient, given these views!
@777margo Thanks Margo! I'm guessing we will be back home sometime between March and May or June of next year. A lot depends on the Chicago city permits which can slow things down. But we have such a good contractor now who does know the 'ropes' and we are hoping things will move along smoothly and quickly. We don't have these views at home because our rooftop deck is on the 4th, not the 33rd floor, but we still want to get home!
@newbank We were there with two friends and the three of them (Kate, MariAnne, Jim) went out on the balcony! I was freaked out totally. THEN, I inched out, holding onto the door and crept along the side of the building with camera in hand. Took a few shots, but can't use them as my hand was shaking too badly! The outdoors at this height on a small balcony is so beyond what I can handle. But, inside, I feel quite safe! All my images will just have to be through the glass window!
Great views, but theres no-where quite like home! It'll look good when the furniture is in - nicely mounted fires extinguisher in each corner, and a couple of framed fire blankets on the wall..... Glad your "temporary life" is getting together, and wonderful to have contractors that you can rely on. And thank you for sharing the drama with us, hope we can all provide support in return.
I know you miss home and your stuff. But this surely is so gorgeous! What a cool view! It seems so glamorous to live in the city with a view like that!
@espyetta You are exactly right! We keep joking that we will never leave. It would be so nice to have a place like this in that there are no stairs and it would be easier than maintaining our little 2 unit condo. But, I don't think we could actually afford it, so now we're hoping construction doesn't move too fast!! The only downside is that it feels very impersonal without any of our own things -- so it's a subtle reminder every day in so many ways that we aren't 'home.'
