Another Secret Reason To Learn Chinese

Every kid growing up likes comic books. It's great now to see that there are tv shows, games, and movies based on the comics I used to read. But a bit sad to see that the comic book industry itself is dying by the day.

One place where it isn't doing so poorly, is Japan. Japan has a lot of black and white comics that are usually serialized in magazines and later compiled into small books. While these books only really started coming over to america in english versions about fifteen years ago, they have been translated into chinese and brought over to taiwan for decades.

One great thing here in asia are these comic book shops, such as the ones shown above. They are shops that a filled to the brim with comics and you can either go there and rent some to take home, or pay by the hour to sit there and read all the comics you want.

I always thought this was a great idea, and on top of that, a great way to practice chinese. One of my big goals is to one day be able to go a place like this and sit down and read some books to practice and learn some new words. Unfortunately I'm still not at that level yet. As most comics focus on a specific topic and while I know common words, I know no words about that topic. For example a few weeks ago I tried to read a comic about pirates, and there was just too many words bout being a pirate that I had no idea about.

But fear not, I shall conquer this one day. As it is I am building up a list of comics that are considered "must reads" and just waiting until the day I can unleash my chinese prowess on those poor unsuspecting books.
