What Beautiful Food Looks Like

Welcome to the Great Pancake Debate 2012. There are three restaurants in Taipei which have pretty good pancakes, and they are in a constant battle to take the top slot in my book. Yesterday I went to what may be the new number one. I hadn't been to this particular place in about a year or two, but they changed their formula a bit cause these pancakes were better than before.

What kind of place is it? Well diner restaurants are sort of popular in Taipei. They don't have the same look as in the states though. They more look like simple restaurants with a large amount of american tchotchkes on the wall....old movie posters, albums, faux antiques, etc.

As for the food, it's a pretty wide variety. Basically it's an excuse to have every western food under one roof. There are all day breakfast foods, mexican dishes, burgers, sandwhiches, italian pastas, salads, desserts, and taiwanese dishes. The food itself is pretty terrible, mainly because the ingredient quality is extremely low. They definitely go for the cheapest food they can get, and this is never more evident than when you have their "pastries" and "ice cream" (they are in quotations for a reason).

However the one thing they all seem to do well is pancakes. Well one just uses pancake mix, but the other two really seem to put love and care in them to make them from scratch. As you can see from the photo, I definitely enjoyed them.

There is another reason why I took a picture of an empty plate. Looking around the restaurant i couldn't really find a picture to take that really showed what the restaurant was about. But then I remembered the Taiwanese habit of always taking pictures of food before they eat it. Which i never agree with cause I always feel the food that is presented in some special way, rarely tastes as good as it looks. So i'd rather see pictures of empty plates, cause if that plate is spotless, than I know the food at that restaurant is good.
