Gorillas

One of the things I think about a lot is a biological study about gorillas that I learned about when I was a kid. In a nutshell it was about how gorillas adopt innovations discovered by younger gorillas. For example if one gorilla finds a better way to eat a piece of fruit, than all the gorillas younger than him will adopt that way of eating fruit, but the gorillas older than him will stick with the old way.

I think this is very apropos of human society. The older I get, the more I think about what latest things I don't do/use, and if I am in fact missing out, or just being smart to avoid those things.

I also see examples of this all over the city. Of course usually when it comes to technology and older people (and even those not so old) not having a firm grasp on the latest breakthroughs. However you can see it in other ways as well.

The picture above is of one of the many abandoned home/construction projects that turn into a trash dump. For the most part it's only old people who throw their trash in these type of places. I'm assuming it's because they just don't want to adapt to the new and extremely confusing trash collection and recycling rules that the government has. It is hard to explain to somebody why they should wait until a specific time on Thursday evening so they can recycle their glass products, when the nearby abandoned building accepts glass 24/7.
