I Miss My Tuesdays

Teachers in Taiwan have a very odd schedule. Basically teachers work whenever other people aren't working. This can mean before students go to work/school in the morning, and then again in the afternoon when kids are out of school, and yet again late in the evening and night when adults are off of work.

All of this can make eating very difficult in Taiwan for teachers, since most places are open at very specific and short lunch and dinner times. But there was one day when my eating schedule was very good, Tuesdays.

At my first job in Taiwan, I had a very long break on Tuesdays, at which time I would usually go home and watch some Monday night football (which is live here on tuesday mornings) and then take a nice nap. But first on my way home I would stop by this one hot dog place.

I talked about it before, but it was very good, and not just "good for Taiwan", it was actually good good. The problem was every time I was there, I was the only customer. In my naivety I thought to myself "wow Taiwan is so great. A business can survive even with so few customers." I was brought back to reality one day when I went for lunch but it was no longer there.

This started my long time curse of finding a place I like and being it's only customer, which leads to it closing. With the alternative being I tell so many people about it and it gets super popular and then I can no longer go there because it's just too busy (although I don't think I've told that story in this specific blog).

The picture above is a very new hot dog place. It actually wasn't very good, and the consensus after eating there was that it wouldn't be there long. Which actually isn't too bad, as i would probably be a bit heart broken if we ate there and it was great, cause then it would sting even more when it eventually closes.

As for the picture, the ridiculous person is my friend from back home who after hearing about all my adventures in Taiwan, decided to come and live here too. In fact there are a handful of foreigners who live here in Taiwan because of my influence. People who are helping to shape Taiwan and of course paying taxes and helping the economy by spending a lot. Sounds like the Taiwan government owes me a kickback doesn't it?

Extra: The gentleman in the picture is actually a pretty good photographer. If you'd like to see some actual good, nay artistic shots of Taiwan, feel free to check out his new photo page at...
