Just the other day a friend was surprised that I will sometimes go to the night market. I can understand the surprise since most of the foods there are like the ones I've been showing pictures of recently, i.e. things that are not so yummy to my western palate.
However I mentioned that one reason I like the night market is for of it's western and other foreigner choices. A night market is a good place to get the sandwich shown above. But of course you have to stop them from "taiwanese-ing" it by putting mayonnaise on it and then showering it with MSG.
Other foreign snacks you can find in some night markets are, burritos, empanadas, pizza, chicken tikka wraps, fried chicken, hot dogs, steak, quesadillas, popcorn chicken, french fries, waffles, pita sandwiches, etc. granted it being taiwan and from a street vendor means the quality is usually quite poor, but a trip to the night market is always a welcome breath of fresh air for the fact that you can have something outside of what you usually eat. Also them being open until around midnight is a godsend as I can't count how many times i've been to a "sandwich guy/lady" (what I call the thing above), because i'd been working late and everything else is closed.
So yes I do like night markets, as they do have something other than chicken hearts, and pig's blood. However what I don't like is crowds. So if i am going to the night market it will be either before 5 when it's just starting or after 11 when it's closing down.
Now if you will excuse me, I am going to go do the other thing that makes me eat at night markets. Go home after a long day, and take a nap. Meaning when I wake up it's late and the only thing I can eat is night market food. Sweet dreams and late eats for me.
