Vauban was probably the most effective military architect that France has ever known, being responsible for the design and construction of dozens of military forts during the 17thC. The fort at Blaye, constructed in 1689, dominates the town and also the River Gironde on whose banks it stands. Access to the fort is by one or the other of two guarded entries: one just wide enough for a vehicle and the other - this one - suitable for pedestrians only. The fort today houses boutiques restaurants and a hotel... and the municipal campsite where we are staying the night. Sorry, but I can't resist these shots...
