OCOLOY Day 270: Fortifications - La Citadelle de Blaye

Another view of the Fort de Vauban at Blaye on the Gironde: this shows a wall reinforcement in the foreground and a sentry post in the background. That no Vauban fort was ever breached is a tribute to the engineering prowess of the designer.

As usual, the image is SOOC and is part of my ongoing OCOLOY project - you can read more about it in my profile. This is also for 'Square September' which you can find more about here - http://365project.org/discuss/general28377/square-september
You'd be a good tour guide!

Neat shot that captures the strength of the wall...I wonder how long it took to build the fort.

@joansmor Distinctly phallic, perhaps? It was a garrison.

@seattlite Thanks Gloria - construction started in 1685 and the major works were completed in 1689. Which, considering that the site extends over 38 hectares (95 acres) and that the work required the demolition of a large part of the existing town of Blaye, is quite remarkable.

So unmistakeably French & then I read it's somewhere I once was on holiday. Great in b&w.

Wonderfully seen and composed, with great tonal range. There is something very beautiful in the simplicity of this shot!
