st Dec 2022 - North Island Robin at Zealandia/Te Māra a Tāne. Zealandia is the world's fully fenced urban ecosanctuary created to protect New Zealand's native species - mainly birds - who have been decimated by the impact of humans and the mammals (like rats) they brought with them. Because Aotearoa/New Zealand was isolated before this many birds had no defences to these predators eg they nested on the ground. The sanctuary has attempted to restore the forest and freshwater systems as closley as possible to their pre-human state. Many species are thriving again
nd Dec 2022 - A Tūī - one of the many birds now thriving in Zealandia and beyond. One of the birds prepared to pose...
rd Dec 2022 - A Kākā - a type of parrot thriving in Zealandia, but at risk elsewhere in new Zealand. You don't want to be eating your lunch when there's a hungry one nearby...
th Dec 2022 - Another Tūī. Because they are beautiful. And they are posers
th Dec 2022 - Tuatara. Back to Zealandia. The Tuatura are a rare medium sized reptile often described as a "living fossil".Some were introduced to Zealandia to protect the species , and have the beads to identify them. Found basking in the sum, as you do if you're a Tuatara
th Dec 2022 - A younger Tuatara, born in Zealandia - so no beads.
th Dec 2022 - Zealandia - a last view of the land that time forgot
th Dec 2022 - Napier New Zealand - a town that knows how to decorate a bus station
th Dec 2022 - Water lilies and reflections
th Dec 2022 - A Takahe, another flightless endangered bird in New Zealand. Living in a bird sanctuary and breeding programme. Everything else was hiding...
th Dec 2022 - Cape Kidnappers - a large gannet colony on the east coast which has chosen to settle on land, unfazed by people a few feet away. But it's private land so only accessible on an organised trip. Taken with a fun panorama setting on my phone.
th Dec 2022 - Cape Kidnappers. A gannet building its nest . The gulls hang about hoping for stray food from the gannets.
th Dec 2022 - While some gannets are still building nests, others have chicks nearly as big as them
th Dec 2022 - Or are still making sure they haven't lost their eggs..
th Dec 2022 - Gannet and new born chick. I confess i didn't take this, but it was taken on my camera. My daughter didn't bring her and then couldn't resist taking mine for a while...I posted this anyway because I think it's a lovely shot and one i wish i had taken
th Dec 2022 - My mate. Gannets are monogamous and breed with the same partner year after year. These rituals reinforce the bonds. They really are extraordinary birds to watch
th Dec 2022 - Thank you for all your gannet comments and faves. It's been fun. The last gannet shot. The colony is minding it's own business when suddenly a gannet returns from gathering food (I think) Sometimes they crash land on the edge of the colony but mostly they just land in the middle like this. if they get the right spot it's grand. If not - there's a lot of unhappy gannet neighbours!
th Dec 2022 - Blue Lake, the Tongariro Crossing
th Dec 2022 - Emerald Lake, Tongariro Crossing
th Dec 2022 - Follow the yellow mud road
st Dec 2022 - Mount Ngāuruhoe, New Zealand. Better known to Lord of the Rings fans as Mount Doom. Under new management...

rd Dec 2022 - Phone panorama shot - the Emerald lakes
th Dec 2022 - Not exactly camouflage...
th Dec 2022 - Thank you for all the comments about the Crossing. This is the Taranaki Waterfall. Fast shutter speed
th Dec 2022 - Taranaki Falls, playing with a slow shutter speed
th Dec 2022 - Taranaki Falls - slow shutter speed
th Dec 2022 - Visiting
th Dec 2022 - Just some colours I liked. Rubbish weather - filling in...
