Today we met with a couple of dear elderly friends to do a little bird watching in hopes of spotting the eagles once again. Unfortunately, no baldies were to be found, but we did have a lovely warm day in the country and a great many variety of birds were spotted.
One friend is especially fond of quail and we came across this guy standing guard for a family trying to cross the road. In a behavior I had never seen before, each and every single one of the brood were standing absolutely still, not a feather was twitching. In fact, the mother was standing with one leg in mid stride. "Yoooo don't seeee us!" All of a sudden the signal was given to cross, so momma streaked across first, then shortly thereafter the teens followed suit. SO dang funny!
I had to look in my bird book to be sure, but I'm almost 100% positive that this is a California Quail as opposed to a Gambol Quail. Very nice shot and I really love the B&W. Instant Fave.
