I was trying to take a picture of my necklace against some glittery card I found in the art shop. Unfortunately I couldn't get a sharp pic and throw the background out of focus at the same time (damn it being dark when I get home from work!) so had to put the necklace on the card in the end. I gave it a hint of a blue tint to make it a bit more interesting too. Sparkly, shiny things are pretty :)
It makes an intrigueing image as it is, but my mind has the picture you wanted. Try moving the necklace well away from, but still in front of the card and make sure the camera is only focussed on the necklace.
@swilde Thanks for the tip :) That's what I tried initially, but the necklace kept swinging (and other half, who was holding it, couldn't stop it from swaying a little). I'll try the shot again when I'm home during the day sometime, so there's more light to play with. I'm glad you understood my rambling to work out what I was trying to do! :)
Fun final pic! If you wanted to try again, get the necklace as close to the camera as you can and the card at least twice as far away. Then use a wide aperture to get just the necklace in focus.
@archaeofrog Thanks for the advice! That's a bit like what I was trying for, but other half couldn't hold it still when it wasn't against the background and it was a bit too dark to capture with the low light levels (I got home from work late, and we don't put the full lights on once the girls go to bed). I'll definitely keep your tips in mind when I get chance to try it again!
this is like a space ship with the universe as background. oh, i can imagine the girls flapping their wings looking at the bright stars. that makes us both happy, doesn't it? very nice shot, alia.
I understand what you're trying for but - bless your other half - you would need a fixed point to suspend it from as breath and pulse are enough to cause minute movements - I've been playing with a clothes airing rack (to give a variety of places to attach things and to suspend them from) and as long as you leave things long enough to become still it seems to work (Parrots, cats, dogs, and small children notwithstanding!)
I love the necklace - a hint of art nouveau about it and the card is perfect for the concept - pretty & celestial.
