The Librarians spent the day in Boulder, CO, high in the mountains, visiting two schools. At the first school we heard an inspirational talk from children's author T. A. Barron. The second school was the site of two workshops. I chose the presentation by a library supervisor from a public school system on doing away with the Dewey classification system. It is very controversial, believe it or not, and led to much lively conversation.
In between the two school visits we had lunch at a charming mall, full of quirky stores and restaurants. The weather was perfect and the people so friendly. What a wonderful day!
Love your collage, Allison ... and what a beautiful place to visit! Interesting about the Dewey Decimal System .. are they going to do away with it. Because of new technology or what?!!
No more Dewey? Given that I work with Library of Congress I haven't been keeping up. What system, if any, are they considering or are they going to the bookstore model??
@karenann@chelmck yes she was promoting the book store model. I believe in my library and many school libraries we already use a modified bookstore model in that we group popular series or genres together for easy accessibility but we still use Dewey, a system that has perfectly serviceable categories already created. Her position was that her new system has led to higher circulation. I say whatever works for you and your patrons is fine but the 500 hours she worked to organize a brand new collection would be a drop in the bucket for our already cataloged collection of over 30,000 volumes.
Wow! It sounds like a wonderful day.... Doing away with Dewey? Really? I had no idea. I tell my school librarian that I don't like it when she moves things around because I can't find anything! haha!
I love your collage. You have a little bit of everything in there. Sounds like a fun trip! I'm behind in the times on what goes on in school these days (teaching methods, etc.) but looks like y'all are doing a fantastic job.
