Purple Beautyberries

Don't you just love the color of these berries? They are so bright they look like strings of decorations for a Christmas tree. I wanted you to see the immature as well as the ripe berries. According to Wikipedia, The berries of this shrub last well into the winter and are an important survival food for birds and other animals, though they will not eat them until other sources are depleted. The berries are highly astringent but are made into wine and jelly.
American beautyberry or Callicarpa americana has been found to be a natural mosquito repellent.

That color is so vibrant it almost looks fake. Great information though- I wouldn't mind having a natural mosquito repellant like this growing in my yard!
