Read for the Record

I learned about this program on twitter:
Each year, millions of adults and children gather on a single day to set a new reading record and to show their support for early literacy by joining Jumpstart's Read for the Record. This year we're going for two reading records as part of this exciting campaign!

On October 6, read Anna Dewdney's Llama Llama Red Pajama and help set the latest overall reading record. When you read online at We Give Books with the children in your life, you'll help set a brand-new record for a shared digital reading experience as well! (This digital reading record at We Give Books will count toward the overall record.) Together you, along with parents and children reading in print and online throughout the United States, will break the overall record of over 2 million readers!

Get started now and you can help us give 50,000 books to more than 6,000 schools across the country. Pledge to read for Jumpstart's Read for the Record from any page on this site, and start reading one of our many free books online at We Give Books. For each book you read as part of the Read for Our Schools campaign, We Give Books will donate a copy of Llama Llama Red Pajama so that a classroom can help break the records!

My colleague and I used the online book provided on the website ( http://tinyurl.com/3gn8yem ) and by sharing it with 7 classes in the library, we added 140 to the total! All ages had fun chanting the story of the little llama who didn't want to be alone at bedtime.
How cool is this. I see dozens of libraries across this nation, going into schools. I just love to see kids still enjoying reading. With all the video games out there, I am glad there are programs like this

It sounds like an exciting project, and at the same time it promotes something that will continue on throughout the years for most of the kids. I so wish I would have fostered that interest when I was younger. I am so happy to see my Grand-daughter reading. She is really into it right now.
