This week I am sharing overlooked stories with my classes. I read this wonderful story to two kindergarten classes today. Reissued with bright illustrations, Beverly Cleary's "The Real Hole" tells of twins, Jimmy, practical and down-to-earth who wants to dig the biggest hole in the world, and his sister Janet who prefers to imagine all kinds of wonderful things to put in the hole, like baby rabbits, a fishing pole or a bird's nest. Jimmy first breaks his toy shovel and then can't handle a full size grown up shovel so his Dad offers him a soldier's trench shovel, which is the perfect tool for a little boy who wants to dig a real hole. Here you see my husband's trench digger from his military duty many years ago. It was the perfect prop to make this story real for kindergartners. Both boys and girls were spellbound as Jimmy dug his hole and then felt great satisfaction when Dad planted a "real" spruce tree in the hole.
visual aids like this are such a plus in story telling. My wife taught 4 and 5 year olds as a pre-school teacher and loves to use these when telling her stories. Great shot
@glendq Thanks. I checked where you can get this book and it is available second hand from Amazon for a few dollars. (Or check with your local library. They may have it.)
