Child Abuse

This instrument of torture was on display at Wilton House in the children's common bedroom. This garment, complete with bone stays, went around a baby's waist to prevent it from bending down and crawling. In the 18th century crawling was considered "animalistic." Babies were encouraged to stand and walk. It is amazing they didn't all grow up with issues!
