When they aren't at our feeder, a whole flock of sparrows takes haven in our lilac bushes. It is fun to hear them chattering when I step outside to put my dogs out. If you look closely you will several in this photo.
@peadar Yes, Peter! We enjoy watching them so much several times each day as they visit our feeder. We are amazed at how many arrive all at once and compete for a few moments to feast on the seeds. At times there are as many as 15-16 all fluttering around. Why are they disappearing where you are?
@bjywamer I don't think I nk anyone really knows. Possibly the introduction of uPVC soffits and facia boards to roofs (they can't access to nest). Possibly a virus. Possibly general decline in bushes and hedgerows in urban areas. Sad.
@peadar That is sad! We subscribe to Birds and Blooms magazine and often see articles on how to provide habitat for the birds in various areas of the U.S. Glad we didn't cut down those lilac bushes when they seemed not to produce many blooms our first summer in this home. This past summer the blooms were abundant. And now we are getting to see how much the sparrows like that bush! :-) Have a great day in your part of this world!
