I kept taking close up shots of the surprise lilies until I finally got one I like. The surprise lilies go by several names. I prefer "surprise" lilies. In the spring, the lilies have masses of leaves. The leaves die down. In late summer, usually after a rain, the flower stalks emerge from the ground. If you forget where the lily plants are located, the flower stalks are quite a surprise. (No leaves appear with these flower stalks.)
