All of my life, I hated running and never understood anyone who chose to run! About a year ago, after a stress fracture in my foot, I started working out with a high school friend of mine who had just started a bootcamp business. He was all into running. Was he crazy? I certainly thought so! When he mentioned we would be running a 5K, I ignored him. When I had plans the day he had it scheduled, he changed the date! I had no excuse. It was a rather enlightening experience and one I had to power through. A few weeks later, a new lady was saying how hard it was for her to run so I told her that I had a huge learning curve. She turned to me and said, "Yeah, but you're a runner!" Ha! Who knew? I started looking forward to running. In 2012, I managed to do three 5K's including one just 2 weeks before my foot surgery. With the new year, I have seen several friends post they races they are doing and the Disney Half-Marathon. All while I sit home and warm the couch with my foot up.
My husband bought me this little runner ornament. She hangs over my desk as a sense of accomplishment. I hope all goes well enough that I will get back to that "soon".
Cool! Running has been a huge part of my life. At 32, I watched a 15K race at a festival and wondered if I could do that...like you I hated running. In HS we had to run to make the track team, even though I was a shot putter. I started with 2 miles..non-stop. A year later I ran my first marathon. For 15 years I ran 13 miles at 4:30 AM, rain, shine or snow. I finished 42 marathons in 15 states, including 4 Boston Marathons. Then I came to my senses, and started running for fun, just a couple miles a day. Since I logged my run every day and kept track, I celebrated my 75,000 mile in 2008. I created and sponsored a race known as the Potato Stomp and it continued as an annual event for 28 years. Running changes your life. I might start training at a higher level soon, because I would like to run one more marathon at 70.
Cute ornament, and very sweet of your husband! He must be very proud of you! And I bet being stuck indoors is really hard right now... hope it won't be long til you can put on those running shoes and make tracks!
Nice capture, i tried running too but cant do it on my own. its too boring & i have no motivation. was doing 7km every 2nd day for a while before my wife hurt her foot & was enjoying it. I do mountain biking once a week instead now :-)
Well there is nothing quite like getting out of your comfort zone and trying something new. I trust your foot will heal soon so you can get back to running
Awesome shot and ornament and great story. Good for you that you have taken up the sport - both my son and girlfriend are runners. I only run when I am being chased.
Our associate pastor is a runner and he has talked numerous times about the running community and how they support one another. Last week a race was held called, "Chilly Cheeks Challenge" which is either a 5 or 10 mile run. A young lady was recently killed while running in a neighboring town, so the runners held the event in her honor. The girl's parents ran in their daughter's place as she had entered to run. So be careful out along the roads!
Great capture and story. Like the ornament - and what a thoughtful husband Hope your foot heals quickly and you can get back to running. How much longer will you be laid up.
Thank you all for your most wonderful comments and support. I promise to be careful, as I don't run in the road! Got more walking done today than I ever would have thought, that's for certain.
