Guarding the nest by danette

Guarding the nest

Today's word is "drink". It's a busy day until late so I stopped by a few regular places to try to spot a bird drinking (or something!!). No birds to be found. As a last ditch effort, I noticed a snake bird soaking up the sun and tried to get to him. Then I noticed a tree nicely reflected in the lake and took a photo. Fortunately, I zoomed out to include the nearby Cypress trees. I n oticed what looked like nests at the top of several trees. THEN I spotted this pair of Herons! I tried to get closer and they were making all kinds of noise. The closer photos didn't actually work out as well since there were so many branches in the way. There were several birds at the tops of these trees.By the way, yes the sky is really that blue today! Sunny and 59 degrees...I'll take that any day!
Love how the Heron nearly blends in with the trees Danette - well spotted

We have a rookery in our area and it is amazing to see such big birds nesting in the tops of the trees. Nice find and capture!

Love the contrast of blue behind the dark branches.

Nice shot - and the angle you've taken it at, makes it appear quite austere ... don't mess with that nest! :)

What a cool shot. I dig the way the nest blends in so perfectly with the foliage.

@shirleytemple A reward for my effort of trespassing? :-)

@top2042 Thank you for your comments!

@bkbinthecity Thanks so much, as always!

@skipt07 I have never seen a Heron nest, Skip. I was so surprised! They looked like centuries guarding the towers.

@dreams Thanks so much, Karen. It was a beautiful day.

@gailmmeek No, the way they were squawking eith me nearby, I am glad they weren't closer to the ground. I was ready for one to swoop down upon me.

@adamj You'd be surprised how the herons even blended in. It was only by accident that I saw them there.

Nice shot of the pair and love the moss in the trees.

@hollandcrew Thanks, Al. In a week or two, the nests won't be seen since the trees will flush out with new growth.

Sounds like you have found a heronry and the nests are active! I know where one is up here too but will have to wait until mid to late April before the herons arrive.
