For this week's ETSOOI challenge for pets, I thought I would stray away from the norm of cuddly or cute and feature something I should imagine very few of us would want as a pet.
THE TARANTULA!!!!!!!!!!!
Thankfully this one was behind glass in a friend's house - I still haven't mustered up the confidence to handle it and probably never will.
from wikipedia:
Tarantulas comprise a group of often hairy and very large arachnids belonging to the Theraphosidae family of spiders, of which approximately 900 species have been identified. This article only describes members of Theraphosidae, although some other members of the same suborder are commonly referred to as "tarantulas". Most species of tarantulas are not dangerous to humans, and some species have become popular in the exotic pet trade.
Tarantulas sizes range from as small as a fingernail to as large as a dinner plate when the legs are fully extended. Depending on the species, the body length of tarantulas ranges from 2.5 to 10 centimetres (1 to 4 in), with leg spans of 8–30-centimetre (3–12 in). Leg span is determined by measuring from the tip of the back leg to the tip of the front leg on the opposite side. Some of the largest species of tarantula may weigh over 85 grams (3 oz); the largest of all, the goliath birdeater (Theraphosa blondi) from Venezuela and Brazil, has been reported to attain a weight of 150 grams (5.3 oz) and a leg-span of up to 30 centimetres (12 in), males being the longer and females greater in girth.
.....how could you???? When we were in Northern Cyprus we found a spider which looks the spit of this in the kitchen where we were staying. Needless to say we left pronto.. :)
Cope if it is behind glass !! cope with a photo !!! but face to face, -- the quickest exit & I would be out , pronto !!!
But looking at it objectively -- the detail is superb, great colour & markings --thank goodness I can not see his eyes!! Great shot Darren !! ughhh !!
My BIL of 32 years had one of these named "Amy" when I first met him all those years ago. Now, that could have done the relationship in right there and then. I like the title
I admire you for even getting close to a tarantula, even in a glass cage. When ever I see one in a pet store, I decide to go back to where the kitties are up for adoption--much safer. :)
Well...as I said I appreciate insects so much more...but doesn't mean I like them...especially spiders ... of any kind! This is an awesome photo but still creepy. Thanks for the info. I don't like having spiders in the house....and if possible try to remove them instead of squishing them...but sometimes it is not possible to do so.
