A few days ago, I was heating up my tea kettle (to which I'm rather attached--still do my coffee the old fashioned way--hot water/french press) when all of a sudden, the coil on my stove top started to spark like a fourth of July sparkler moving it's way down the stick after being lit. It was so intense, it bore a hole in my kettle, which made the kettle leak on the electric sparks, which made it burst into flame and then throw coil bits all to the left on my counter.
It was all very dramatic and scary, and the whole time, my brain was like "what the hell do I put on this to put out the fire? I know it's not water? How do I stop this before telling everyone just get out and go!" And then I took the kettle off the stove, turned off the electricity and my husband ran to the fuse box to shut off the power to that area.
Meanwhile, my daughter is just at the kitchen table talking about the big blue light she saw emitted from the area when the water (I presume) hit the coil. The kettle has a hole ( see here: http://365project.org/darylo/album4/2015-03-11 ), and just to the left of this damaged coil is another hole made into the stove housing.
So, I'm glad I could say this went no further. The counter is ruined, but I think we can get an insurance claim for that--the stove, well, the other burners work, but I have my baking soda right by it "just in case."
Funny, never considered the fire extinguisher we have--we have one in all parts of the house. The brain just can't function fast enough.
Great macro, and electrifying story. ( Sorry) Glad it had a happy ending. You are right about the fire extinguisher, you never use them, why should you think of them in an emergency.
Nice macro shot! It sounds very scary and I am glad that no one gets hurt. Believe it or not, my husband and I were looking at fire extinguishers at Amazon today because we don't have one at home.
the brain does funny things when there is a fire. One time my bread got fire when it was in the toaster for to long. I was like I need water to turn it of. So grabbed the bread, ran to the sink to but water on the bread. By the time I reached the sink the fire was out because of the wind. Silly me ;)
