Every year, Milton High School (where my kids go to school) places flags for each of the victims of 9/11 on their front lawn (a student project), and they hold a ceremony in the morning to honor those we lost.
I'm not one to attend ceremonies well--I don't like crowds, and I'm usually a loner--wanting to process things by myself. It's a blessing and a curse.
I'm always struck by this massive student led project in our community. Later in the day, I did make time hoping to see the memorial in a more vacant mode. I had some nice conversations with others who were there, and then a family appeared with young boys--they went running through the memorial--free, wild, yet careful not to disturb the flags (each with the name of a person who died). I found it so refreshing that there was joy in the midst of all that sadness.
So I caught one of the boys.
His shirt could not have been more appropriate.
Thank you Milton High School for this yearly tribute to 9/11.
