Help! The photo on the left shows over 40 dots on my image--I chalk it up to having my focus off, a super-wide aperture, and a high ISO. I do love the abstract it creates with the textured circles within, but it took some time in LR5 to "heal" all the dots (there are still some faded ones in there I believe, but I love the one on the right--it's been one of my bucketlist bokeh items oddly enough).
So is this a dirty sensor? Lens issues? Tried it with two lenses--same result. If I used this for submission anywhere (not that I am), would these errors be very visible?
Were the specks exactly the same with both lenses or were they different? I've seen this in my images when there is dust in the rear optic of the lens. If the sports were exactly the same with both lenses then you probably have dust on your sensor :)
@stacypie I should take one more shot with the two in the exact same position switching out the lenses. I am having the sensor cleaned in January with my camera club, but it's really obvious here I have an issue! Unless it happens by some freak way when there is just so much open. Would hate to have this for any work I need to submit--the errors would be visible up close! Thanks for your response!
@darylo No problem! Here's an article that may interest you - you have the "onion ring" effect on these bokeh balls as well, and this explains why... http://bit.ly/1AJgaOD
@stacypie I actually love the onion ring effect on this shot and used the clarity function in LR5 to accentuate it (and opted to keep the grain in), but now I am not happy that it could be a problem. But I think settings matter in these situations--for night photography especially. Better get to cleaning that sensor though. I noticed in the article that so many of the samples had the spots, but it does not address them as dust particles. But I'm assuming they are... Thanks so much for the article and research! :)
I don't necessarily pay attention to the other settings since they won't really impact what you are doing. Even a slow shutter speed would show the particles if they are there.
@danette@stacypie OH! Based on the response to my discussion item, it looks like the tips of the light bulbs are the culprits! If I analyze their placement within the circles they are approximately the same position depending on the angle at which they are on the tree. Math! Gotta love it! I'll still do a sensor check for dust , though, but it will be cleaned at the beginning of January. And Danette, I'm returning to the very spot where your son proposed (Monday), so I'll tag you if I can get better shots this time around! So glad, fingers crossed, that I am going with more joy in my heart this year, but I still wish I had been able to be part of that wonderful moment for your family!
That's great. I'd love a wonderful shot of the area. I am super glad you have joy in your heart this year. Though I wish you had been there last year, you were extremely helpful. Knowing a spot ahead of time certainly must have alleviated at least some of his nervousness!
@bill_fe Thanks Bill! Looks like it is the tips of the bulbs on the tree! I was pretty worried there. Now I'm happy I had some "heal" in LR5 practice. :)
