Covered Bridge in Swanzey, New Hampshire

The first day at the Road Scholar program we were taken to see six covered bridges in the area.
Not seen a covered bridge before, why did they cover them? Not that it looks out of place!

Carole,
They covered bridges in the 19th century to protect them from the elements and make them last longer. Now they are treasured and considered iconic images of New England. Most of them are still in use for cars, so they lasted quite well (with some repairs I'm sure). They are often painted red.

Deborah, thanks for the info, it's always nice to learn something. I think they look good!
