One of the best things I found in an old pile of paper I was organizing was a folder with a large print I had made of this photo, taken on the cliffs in Lynton, North Devon on my 2009 trip to England. This is one of my favorite places I've ever been in my life. I spent several days walking the cliff paths in the fabulous cool June air, with the wild goats running around.
My favorite position is to be on top of a cliff overlooking the ocean, and some of my absolute favorite cliffs have all been in England--this area, the Valley of the Rocks; Durdle Door in Dorset; and Whitby Abbey on the cliff overlooking the North Sea. Places like that make me ecstatic.
I made six two-week trips to England by myself between 2001 and 2012. Peter does not like to travel, so I went alone. I journeyed way off the beaten path, so that I generally did not meet up with any other Americans. Those trips were highlights of my life, and the memories and photos are precious. Now I'm older and not sure I'm game to go alone again, although there are so many other parts of England I still want to see. Maybe looking at my photos will get my courage up to go solo again. Finding this one was a good antidote for a cold gray March day of staying home organizing.
Lovely greens and blues Devon is the only county in England to have two coast lines a north and a south. I've only ever visited the south which is quite different to this but pretty in its own way :)
Devon & Cornwall both beautiful areas of England. I am going to Cornwall in May for a few days, they have cliffs & rocks, so different to our beach areas which are flat! Glad you have nice memories 🙂
How nice that you're going to Cornwall in May. I haven't been there yet, but it's on my list. I don't drive when I'm in England (I know I wouldn't be good at doing everything in reverse), so I have to plan very carefully to make sure I will be able to get around on public transportation. I haven't figured it out for Cornwall yet. The photos I've seen of the cliffs there are really beautiful. I love England, as you can tell.
I've been to the south coast of Devon a little bit too. My friends in Dorset took me to Sidmouth because I wanted to visit the Donkey Sanctuary. I also took the boat down the river from Totnes, where I stayed a few days, to Dartmouth. That was beautiful, but I think I prefer the wild, rocky north coast. Here in New England I prefer the rocky coast of Maine to the sandy beaches of Cape Cod.
I've liked just about every place I've been in England.
There are some beautiful places in England but also Wales and Scotland. Devon is particularly beautiful. One of my favourite places is Dorset and I love Durdle Door.
