It's a green world now at the Pond. As we walked around on a cool, mostly gray afternoon, it seemed a bit dull at first, but then I saw: a beautiful empty nest on the ground beside the path, two geese chatting along the back shore, a tree covered with these little yellow flowers... and mama goose, who is nesting.
I visit her every time I go to the pond now. Although we have many ducks and geese at the Pond and I've been watching ducklings and goslings grow up for over twenty years, until last year I had never seen a nest. Then in April 2016 I discovered one on a little hill above the water on the south side of the Pond, removed from the path but still out in the open. It took a long time for those eggs to hatch; I checked back frequently, until finally the goose was gone from the nest and there were seven new goslings on the pond. I read that geese go back to the same spot to nest again, and sure enough, I discovered this goose in the same place a week or two ago. Once in a while I see her get up and rearrange the eggs with her beak. They're very big eggs. I couldn't see exactly how many.
