I read this article the other day and was horrified to discover that the phenomenon known as Manhattanhenge (see link below) will fall on the day that I was supposed to be in NYC. After a series of unfortunate events, my trip to that part of the world has been postponed- 'til goodness knows when :(
Anyway, I would be keen to see if any New Yorkers take advantage of this twice-a-year occurrence for their project. I look forward to experiencing Manhattanhenge....from afar lol!
This shot is a good example of the effect when the setting sun aligns with the street grid of Manhattan, though it was not exactly on Manhattanhenge it was close. The actual day had overcast sky:
Manhattanhenge is a wonderful phenomenon that brings many people out into the middle of the streets often blocking traffic to a halt trying to get shots. Here is another:
Here are the crowds lining Park Avenue overpass above 42nd St to get pics. Normally that road is all taxis with no people allowed up there, but that evening people took it over :
@squamloon - Probably like 50% of the time. But even when the clouds have obscured the view, its always a fun time for a hour or so to check out the crowds and how they run into the street whenever the traffic lights change. Here is another crowd shot:
@tillycarter - Krista I hope you don't mind that I posted some pics related to your discussion, but thought a first hand account may be interesting. I will be there again this year to see what I come up with.
@michaelelliott Great shots in the city. It should also work at sunrise too right? Above about 14th Street north of the villages where the streets go right through, if I remember my map?
@frankhymus - The best streets are the major crosstown arteries like 14, 23, 34, 42 and 57th. Then you want a major landmark like ESB on 34 or Chrysler on 42 and you want on a hill or above street level elevation. So best spots are few and crowded.
i love it when the light does this... we don't have quite this effect in toronto, but some of my favoritist light happens when the sun is low and streaming straight down the street :)

I'd be interested to know how often it's been overcast for the event...
