2 days in Amsterdam

February 6th, 2012
Hi all,

We're off to Amsterdam for three nights/2 days next week and I'm going to have very little time for photography (we'll be part of a group of eleven ranging from 6 years old to 80 years old).

I'll probably be using my Sony HX5V which is a fairly sophisticated point-and-shoot. This is mainly because it's small and light and can be popped into a waist pouch under my coat (I gather it's pretty cold on the continent right now ...). Also we're travelling by Ezjet so I'm limited to cabin baggage only - 1 piece, no exceptions not even for a handbag :-(

We're planning a canal boat trip and a visit to the van Gogh museum but we don't know what else we're planning to do. Given that the senior members of our party aren't going to be able to spend much time out-of-doors if it's cold, I could find myself doing a lot of indoor shots (restaurants, cafes, accommodation).

We'll be staying in the Jordaan area rather than at city centre hotels and we've never been to Amsterdam before so I have very little idea of what to expect.

Can anyone give me some ideas and inspiration so I don't waste any precious photography time that I DO get?

Thank you,

Armorel

- Floating Flower Markets
- Heinekken Factory
- Ann Frank House
- Walk along the canals in Jordaan
- Vondelpark

The Gaucho grill (there's lots, just look them up) do an all you can eat ribs for EUR 18. I think there's some places in Leidseplein (sports bars etc) that do it for maybe 14, but the gaucho's ribs are better

hmm I'd give the sex museum a miss.. its pretty boring
Also, regarding the red light district, its very safe because its policed but at night, don't go 2 streets to the east, it gets dodgy on the surrounding streets - alot of muggings etc

Good luck!

@toast
Thanks :-)
With such a varied age group, I'll be more than happy to let the others explore the sex museum while I look after the 'youngsters' and 'oldsters' :-)
It looks like its going to be very VERY cold so ribs at the Gaucho sounds like a good option for food too :-)

Great tips from Weng. The Rijksmuseum is brilliant, has a lot of the old Dutch Masters and the whole building complex has very interesting architecture for photos.

@bmnorthernlight this is also true :)
@armorel you may want to consider the Rijksmuseum but I worry with only 2 days there you can potentially chew up alot of time in museums when seeing a few other sights may give you a better cross section

@maaikel you may have some great thoughts on this.

You could also visit the Palace on the Dam, it's just been totally restored and it's beautiful! Please don't cue for the Anne Frank museum, I think that it's an amazing site, but it always has a very long cue...

Take twenty minutes to a tranquil place. A small alley brings you from the very crowded Kalverstraat in the city center to the quiet, peaceful Begijnhof (a collection of small buildings used by Beguines. These were various lay sisterhoods of the Roman Catholic Church, founded in the 13th century in the Low Countries, comprising religious women who sought to serve God without retiring from the world.); http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C3%A9guinage
Enjoy!
