After much consideration I have decided to buy a 100 mm usm macro lens. Not buying new just yet as I want to test the ebay second hand market first to see if I can grab a bargain.
I have looked online and could buy one new for £340. So what would a reasonable price to pay secondhand be? £200 to £250? What you guys and girls think?
In like-new condition you'd probably be getting a pretty good deal if you can pick one up under £270. With missing original caps, paint chips or minor coating scratches, you could probably find one for around £225 with a bit of patience.
Make sure you get the USM one if that's what you want, there are plenty of the older non-USM models floating about on the second-hand market, and while it's still a pretty good lens, it has some limitations compared to the USM model and doesn't warrant the same price. Don't assume the seller knows what they are selling, lenses are very easy to mix up, especially if it's being sold by someone who doesn't know much about photography. Always check the photos to make sure it's the right model.
@abirkill excellent info. Thanks. I noticed that a started a thread about the differences between usm v non usm. Definatly going for usm. Cannot afford IS one though.
@jwlynn64 thanks. I am lucky asi can insure all my gear on my current house insurance so will get it replaced if it does go wrong. Just need to remember to add it to the list
Check it *very* carefully for scratches, especially if there is a filter on it. I have heard of people covering up a scratched front element with a ND 0 filter.
I have purchased a couple of lens used from ebay and craigslist with no regrets. Small scratches usually are not a problem on the front glass. I have the 100mm and it is a sweet lens. You will love it. Good Luck with your search.
