Hi all, have been investigating an underwater housing for my DSLR to find how expensive they are ($1900). So now I am considering a point & shoot. I am looking for one that will also shoot in RAW. Any suggestion?
I had (notice I said had) The Canon D10. It worked okay, but then it just wouldn't turn on. It had no water damage or anything. I only used it is few times too. Since I really only used it for travel and snorkeling, it was after the 1 year warranty when I noticed it no longer worked. I sent it back and they basically said it is out of warranty and we don't fix them any way. I looked up reviews and a lot of others had bad luck with it too. So, I would not recommend this one. I hope some others have a good one to recommend as I wasn't to get a new one that may last longer.
There is a lumix one out there that looks interesting. I don't know anything about it, just stored the info away as I hope to go to Hawaii in November.
I have the Olympus TG-820. It doesn't shoot RAW, but I'm taking mostly snapshots in the water, so I'm not super concerned about that. I've been very happy with the shots I've taken with it. I used it several times last summer, and I haven't had any leaking problems...when I was searching review for a waterproof camera, I read that many still leaked.
@sonibear I ahve Lumix that goes down 3 meters. Bought it for rafting. There is also one that goes deeper. These are pretty cool cameras and take great photos. Olympus makes one too. Depends on how deep you want to go.
@cmc1200 bummer about no raw in the Olympus TG, I heard good things about it. @peterdegraaff, does the Lumix shoot raw? what's the top of the line underwater Lumix at the moment? I can settle with 5 metres, provided the camera is positively buoyant.
Canon G15 and the Canon WP-DC48 underwater housing. (Or if that's too expensive then work your way back down the G range to the earlier models).
Not only do you get a great underwater camera for not that much money, you get a great pocket camera for above-water use as well. Shoots RAW and has a super-bright f/1.8-f/2.8 zoom lens, which will gather a lot of light underwater.
No personal experience, but it seems to be the go-to choice of many Canon (and other) photogs who want affordability and a step up from the average compact underwater camera.
I brought my daughter an underwater point and shoot camera.. Its a fujifilm XP50.. It takes fantastic photos underwater and it only cost $150.. Im seriously considering buying one for myself to put in my camera bag..
Some of its features include..... 14MP, 5X wide 28mm zoom, optical image stabillization, 360 motion panorama, 5m waterproof, 1.5m shockproof, -10C freeze proof, full HD 1080p and dust proof...
I've had an Olympus water/shock proof and it was great until i kicked the bucket after warranty.. then i got a canon power shot D10... i really dont like it as a regular point and shoot (at all!) but it is fantastic underwater...
Theres a couple others in my project too one just last week and another one a couple days before or after that one i posted...
I shoots 12mp but just jpg as far as i know, though its about 3 years old im sure there newer ones would shoot raw?
@sonibear Paige ( @paigeypie ) recently got an underwater camera... I'm not clever like you chaps at reading exif info, and no idea what it does, but she seemed happy with it...
@sonibear no worries! I've given the camera a good work out this summer...
Another - this one unedited... linked from my Facebook account https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/307663_10151428639349052_422323103_n.jpg
I've had no troubles with leaks or anything, it is a little chunky to slip into your pocket (my old olympus was slimmer than this but it had an automatic little lense cover that used to get stuck alot!)...
Also must give this camera a 10 out of 10 for shock proof "ness", my kids have dropped it SO many times... they mash buttons and its still doing the job it should!
As I think has already been mentioned above, there are still no underwater P&S cameras that shoot RAW (as far as I've found anyway). However, as has also been mentioned, you can get a good-performance non-waterproof P&S (with RAW and manual capability) + waterproof housing for a fraction of what it would cost you for the DSLR housing alone. Good luck!
@peterdegraaff I was intrigued as I've never heard of the Nikonos. I checked them out on eBay and I must have one! You know, the novelty of it. I saw one going for $80, then another one selling out of Japan for $4,500!!!
I did exactly the same...being a beach person...and in the end opted to buy the Canon Powershot D20. Arrived yesterday and cant wait to try it out.. If it is what I want I will then go for the housing of my Canon 7D... what do they say...baby steps :)

It's not a camera, but it's a case for DSLR cameras. My parents gave me as a present this last Christmas. It's not cheap (120€), but it works so well! You can use your DSRL without worries with this case. Resists underwater up to 5 meters
