Hi everyone. I'm travelling to Boston for a few days next week. Not sure I'll have too much time for photography but has anyone got any tips on good places to go? I have been before but that was pre 365 so everything's changed since those innocent days! Would welcome your suggestions
Cheers
Alison
I'm in Shrewsbury-about 45 min west of Boston. We're getting over 2 feet of snow tomorrow into Sat... not sure what that will do for photography next week. Acorn St. in Beacon Hill is the most photographed street in America. The Back Bay is also nice for the architecture- Commonwealth Ave is very pretty. That's right next to the Boston Common where the 'Make Way For Ducklings' statues are. And the Harvard Bridge is great at sunset.
Just heard they are expecting a gigantic snow storm in the Northwest in the next day or so. Hope it's over when you arrive. Can't help you with tips but I'll ask Hank if he has ideas though it's been a while since he graduated Harvard. You should come visit me in D.C. :)
Boston is fun, I don't live there but I have visited. Bring your snowshoes - they are expecting 3 feet of snow over the weekend! Anywhere in the historic district/freedom trail is full of photo ops.
I'm sure you'll be fine by Wednesday - they've been preparing for the storm all week. My favorite place in Boston is the North end - the Italian section filled with narrow streets, great restaurants and pastry shops. As far as photo ops go, sounds like Katie's given you some good ideas - I'm from Vermont and don't get into the city all that often. Any place new, though is typically filled with inspiration - I look forward to seeing your images!
@katieannb looking at pictures of acorn street. Looks very European and a good tip. Plus I've just remembered that the first time I went to Boston we got snowed in and couldn't get back to New Jersey for a couple of days. Guess I should pack my hiking boots!
@fueast Seriously checking flights but don't get too excited until everything is confirmed. I am having my eyelid re-aligned tomorrow but I expect to be in good shape by the 16th (would arrive PM). The other thing is the weather. No doubt the storm will be over but the snow/ice could be around for weeks. I figure that if it's too nasty for a wuss like me I can always stay in the hotel and get room service while you traipse in the snow banks with your camera in tow. Then we can meet for cocktails - haha!!
Definitely hit the north end. Also, go into the Custom House. I always stay there when I am in town. There's an observatory up at the top where you'll get some great views and there's Osprey that nest up there, though I've never been there at a time when I've had the good luck to see one. There's also some interesting nooks and crannies to find some good shots.
I think the prediction right now is 27 inches for Boston. It will be fine by next week. It's supposed to be in the 40's and raining on Monday. The top of the Prudential Building is neat too. You pay to go up to the observation deck.
@fueast Fannuel Hall (AKA Quincy Market) is great. Follow the Freedom Trail and you can get some historic shots of Paul Revere's House and the Old North Church. The wharf area near South Station is excellent, as is the North End. Tons of photo ops in the Boston Commons. We're getting almost 3 feet of snow, though, so I'm not sure how clear the Commons will be.

@fueast Hope you're still on for this 'cause I have plane tickets and hotel room. Arrive Friday 16/2 around mid- day and stay until Monday afternoon. I'll e-mail you to coordinate further.
@meisen325 Fantastic! Although it could be a long weekend for you if you decide you don't like me in the first 5 minutes.... I have the conference until 5 on sat plus I will have to switch hotels at some poInt. complicated. Anywaaay, get researching further good places!
@fueast Correction: arriving Saturday around noon. Will keep myself entertained until you're free. Then we can decide who's more obnoxious, haha! Let me know about your eating preferences so I can start looking for places to eat. Unless you have some ideas already. I''m flexible.
@meisen325 Ha I can win that one hands down I think :-) I am a bit fussy about food being a vegetarian. The meeting app for the AAAS meeting has a restaurant search function. Maybe that will be useful? Anything but a steak house or fish restaurant should be OK - I remember there being a lot of nice Asian restaurants in Boston and some great Indian street food. Not too fussy as long as there are veggie options.
@hoosierflygirl OK thanks for that. The thought of delays was not good! @btorrey Thanks for the tip! @sailingmusic Thanks I will check out Joyces Album.
check out all the storm photos today. We did get 2 feet and it has not stoppped yet. My daughter lives in Boston and worked at a hospital overnight. The snow is deep but all should be well by Wednesday.
The suggestions above are perfect. The city is very friendly with stress like this. You should have a good time.

@cabinfest I've stayed at the Custom House too! We had the suite way up top with the balconies with gargoyles.
