Firstly: I am a huge nerd. I mean really huge. Massive.
Ok with that out of the way: recently I noticed that the number of views each of my photos was getting was substantially lower than my number of followers. Fair enough, not many of my photos are even worth looking at; still, I wondered - how many of my followers have since quit the site and/or their project?
So I wrote a tool to find out. And then made it nice and tidy so that others could use it, if they were similarly curious.
Enter your username, click Scan, and it'll check the activity of all your followers. Any that haven't posted a photo in 28 days it considers to be "dead", but lists other timeframes too so you can see more detail.
Wow! This is a wonderful tool! NOT nerdy at all...creative. I am wondering how to delete pics in my fav list that are from accounts that people have deleted. I have many there...that I don't want on my list, but because the individual has deleted or changed their account, I can't remove it. Or can I? Thanks for any help!
Yea I've been thinking this most of the year, my views drop all the time...of my 144 followers, 43 we could say are dead. And the most active are 79 (so lets say 79 are committed to the project) so in theory I should be cabable of getting 79 views a day on average...BUT of course we know that's not gonna happen because not everyone opens up every thumbnail on their home page. I get anywhere between 18-60 views, all depends on what sort picture you produce for that thumbnail to be opened.
Never the less, wicked tool. No idea how you made it, great effort.
btw That is also one reason why I don't follow people who follow me and only have like 8 pictures, as no doubt they will quit the project with a month, but that's a different debate.
40 of my 145 followers are considered dead. 86 are the most active (alive). Kind of fun finding out. Thanks for sharing it. Nerds of the world unite! I think that we control most things anyway.
Nerdy genius that is so much fun! I had 3 out of 78. I knew that already. One is a friend in real life and I really miss the photos of the other two. What are ya gonna do?
I was also wondering if we can delete those favorites out of our favorite file if they no longer have an account or are no longer participating but perhaps that is a question for Ross.

Ok, so I ran your scan- pretty cool!! 15/143 followers are dead thats 10%. I am very impressed to say that of 143 followers 109 have been active with 7 days :)

Thanks Steve - this is great!! 89 of my poor followers are dead... that is 29%... There should be some kinda rule that said after 2 months of being inactive you'd get an email where that had to click on a link if they still wanted to be on 365 - that would prob mean a lot less "dead" people on here :)
Now what we need is an app to tell us how many of the people we are following are "dead" and who they are. I am at the point where I don't like to follow new people cos I feel I wan't be able to keep up with everyone, but I know several are dead really. Any chance of that next Steve? Please? :-D

It's up to 780 Followers now (which I don't have!) and they're all coming up dead....I'm getting a little freaked out that you may all be zombies...
You only have 60 followers, should take all of 45 seconds. Most likely you're not putting the right username in; yours is roth so just enter that in there.
Just tried it myself and it does work fine... if you're still having issues, let me know what browser you're using. Tested it in everything I had to hand, and I'm not doing anything complex, but you never know...
There's not much point in me running it because I have only been here a little while and my followers and I comment on each others picture regularly. I think its a really good app and I salute you for being nerdy enough to write it. Cheers!
Cracking up at some of the comments on here about zombies and burials too. I should also add that I do try and comment regularly on the photos I find interesting. I hope I don't offend anyone if I don't get around to it straight away. I love my 365 and the folks I have "met" here.
Very interesting app. I regularly check to see what my followers have posted, so was surprised to find that 14 are deadbeats. I try to comment on my followers at least once a week.

I'm a nerd too and wow the numbers are impressive! Only 6 are dead! Now I admit 6 out of 29 is really pathetic but still thanks for the gadget.
youch!!! 27 out of 124 are dead zombies...that's 21% i usually go through once a month and delete the people i follow if they've not posted in over a month. just wondering if anyone knows how long these accounts stay out there. would be nice if after they were inactive for say 6 months/1 year, that they were deleted. might keep from old baggage jarring up the system. just thinkin', just sayin', not complain'.....thanks "the steve" for this!

Well, Matt, 186 scans have been done so far... of 18,302 followers. So 18k extra hits. Eek! I might optimise it so it cross-references each person's followers to save on load a little...
I love nerds!!! 55 funerals to conduct once I find the bodies!! 25% of my followers are dead..... love this tool!!! Mind you it took me a while to find out what exactly is my user name..... first put in the entire thing and when it had scanned over a thousand followers I began to suspect that I'd made a mistake! Then I put in both words of my name only - similar problem! Eventually I read through this entire thread and found the answer! Whole thing completed in seconds with pretty colours as well!! Love it..... now.... how do I find the dead.... bring out the bodies!! That's your next nerdy tool sorted!
But the question remains.... how do we bury them? I have stopped following the dead .... that was easier ..... but can't work out how to trim the others off....

Great Tool
This is an eye opener, as my images all have fallen on the view-ability lately. I took it as summer months and people not having time, still might be the case, but a lot of my images haven't seen 50 views and with:
total of 265 users
155 (58%) being active more/less daily
81 (31%) being dead
I am starting to understand the drop in them.
I also take this as a fun great tool that I think ROSS should add to the site (given that you would hand over the source code to him) .
I am curious if I show up on any of the DEAD LIST :) muuuahahahahaha
Well, I really didn't envisage this being quite so popular, hence the rough edges with the username thing messing up. Sorry about that! It's fixed now, and will tell you how to get your username if you enter something wrong, which given nobody'll probably use it ever again, is pretty good timing I think.
It's also faster now, and won't give Ross as many headaches, due to caching results. Sorry about the traffic spike Ross!

btw Curiosity got the better of me and I had to play with it.. would be rude not to. Anyways, it told me that ALL of my followers were dead. I gave up at 1,458 and counting, and turned it off LOL

I just tried again, with the new app and proper username.. out of my 28 followers, none are dead (phew!) and 2 (of the 41) I follow are dead. Which is amazing as I have only been here about 6 weeks. This is really cool. Thanks for the new toy :)

Nice job, sadly, I only had 7 zombies, which means that my photos are just not that interesting anymore, ups and downs, you know, sometimes I have a good one, then followed by a week or more of not so good ones. In any event, cool idea, nerdiness or not, I like it.
Cool tool, thanks for sharing. I've wondered about that myself, there are only about 10 followers I hear from regularly frankly. Not everyone who follows people checks photos daily/weekly of course, but it seems to weird to have so many followers and only so many "regulars."

This is so cool, thank to "the Steve" for the second version which tells you which of your followers and followees are zombies - have 5 zombies in followers but only 4 names appear - I wonder who is invisible and what makes them so?
Obervation - going through my "dead" followers I note a few that are personal friends that have a 365 login, and use it to follow certain people, but they never post pictures of their own.
Ross: is this a potential membership category for the future ... given that most of us are posting to get eyeballs, we should not mind if the eyeballs don't reciprocate with their own posting?
Hey.... one of my Zombies has come back to life! Now there are only 54 clinging to my cassock tails! Maybe there is hope for some of the remainder? Perhaps "The Steve" aka "King of the Nerds" will find a way to send messages to the hundreds of Zombies out there and bring about a mass resurrection! Just a thought!! After all, what else would a true Nerd be doing with his/her time? And who but a closet-nerd would run the programme on two consecutive days?!!!

Another EIGHT resurrections since this morning!! Unbelievable. It's a miracle!! I suspect that discovering that they were in zombie status has moved a few back into life!! Or maybe it was the messages that I sent to some of them!! Wonder what it feels like to return from limbo?

I did notice one little thing though, when I looked at my list of zombies, it showed my mom and best friend as being "dead" but they are also both ace members who have started a new album for a second year of 365.... and I've also noticed that my follower list has decreased quite a bit... since I also started a new album with my second year, I might also appear to be a zombie. I assure you I am alive and well :) Just thought this might be helpful.

How awesome because Ross must have removed the faves from our list if they were no longer members of the site. I hated having favorite photos on my list of people who deleted their accounts. I figure if you are not using the site, delete your project so people don't keep clicking on it. If you are taking a break that's fine, but if you know you are not using it anymore, and have announced it, please delete your account.
Karen, sorry but l don't get this. If you added a photo to favourites it was because you liked that photo, yes? Does it matter then if the person that took it is still active, taking a break, dead, zombified or whatever? It is the photo you like that matters surely?

I noticed the same thing as Debbie when I checked the 'dead' and thought that they were still uploading... I checked a few and all seemed to be now uploading to a 2nd album...
I must agree with Trevor: my project will eventually be finished and I would like it to remain online for people to see. I would hate to delete the whole thing simply to not show up as a dead follower on people's lists. I figure, they can just unfollow me, no?
Interesting stats since 30% of my followers are dead and 35% of those I follow are dead too! Swings and roundabouts really. Definitely a fun thing to find out tho at the end of the day I don't see any reason to delete anyone just because they don't follow, nor to get rid of any favourites belonging to dead followers as these are what I chose dead or alive!
I agree with Trevor (whether he is a zombie or not ;) ). If I fav a photo it is because I like it, not because the person who took it is still using their account. Most of my faves are inspiring in some way and I would be sad to lose them. Surely you can decide for yourself it you want the pictures removed from your list?
I'd love to try your program, but it says my username is invalid - nenaslug. I tried 3 browsers even. Internet Explorer, it won't even run and Safari and Firefox tell me my account is invalid. Perhaps I am doing something wrong?
interesting idea, but i'm having it trouble making it work for my account. starts running then just seems to get stuck (says it has 400+ minutes and counting until completion). not sure what it's getting hung up on

Half of my followers are dead and about half of the ones I follow are dead. Considering not many people followed me to start with and even less were *really* following me I guess that explains why no one comments on my photos anymore.

This is a fab tool! i was feeling quite unloved and figured there must have been an absolute decline in the quality of my photography, but now i know that 46% of my followeds are zombies i don't feel so bad :)
@eyebrows it works and that's the important bit ;) Didn't mean it to sound as harsh as it did *lol* My monitor may be slightly to blame since it sees more colors than most.
Ive lost a few followers but gained a few too, finding it hard to keep up with 365 tbh but dont want to admit defeat and give up, I shall check this fab tool out soon x

Out of 316 followers...128 were dead. 40%. That's a lot!
