Newbie: One week in!

January 8th, 2011
Hey guys, I'm Rachel, 20 years old, and in my final year at university in the lovely city of Plymouth. I've been wanting to start a project 365 for years now, I briefly did one in my first year of college... only to forget my camera several times and losing interest.

I thought... I'll join a proper community, get involved with other people's projects and succeed in completing one! Fingers crossed.

Anyway, give me a shout if you're fairly new here too and I'll have a look at your stuff. It'd be interesting to get some friends on here!

I just started this year as well although it has been something I've been meaning to do for a few years. Thanks to picking up a new DSLR last fall I finally figured I had no excuse not to do one starting with the new year.

Good luck!

I'm in the same boat. Been here for a week & enjoying it. Also would LOVE to get an DSLR, but I am poor. In the meantime I get along great with my canon powershot, using mainly manual. Looking forward to a year filled with amazing images from around the world!
January 8th, 2011
@marubozo Ah ha, I would love to get a DSLR though I have been hinting for one for my 21st. Which one have you got?

@myla Well I've just had a quick look at your photos and wow, I really like the photos the powershot takes! I love my IXUS but the optical zoom really lets it down. Does the powershot have any flash issues with the lag?? I sometimes go to take the photo, the camera appears to be 'doing something' but alas no photo had been taken ha. I swear it's something to do with the flash.

Hi, Im Rachel as well ;D you have some great photos for only having a point and shoot. keep up the goodwork.
January 8th, 2011
Just had a look at your week and think you're doing just great! Hope you can keep it going and it fits in with your year!
January 8th, 2011
@littlebitcrazy Yay, name buddies. Ah I need to confess, some of the recent ones are my from my Grandad's old Fujifilm finepix S7000 (I think that's the model?) It's only a 6mp but it takes fairly decent photos! But oh well, they'll both do until I get round to the DSLR ;)

Another newbie, a week in, looking for people to follow, to inspire me and keep me going! :)
January 8th, 2011
Hi Rachel
Another newbie here! and another sans DSLR - just using manual on my Kodak easyshare digital, but so far happy enough with what I'm getting.
I'd love to follow and be followed!
January 8th, 2011
@thereselc Following :) I'm sans DSLR as well!
January 8th, 2011
@rlinaker I picked up a Canon 550D in October. It's a sickness. Since buying the camera I've already blown through over $2,000 more in lenses and accessories. :o But it's a lot of fun. :D
January 8th, 2011
@thereselc @minxymissk Following both of you =)

@marubozo Ha ha! Oh wow, it is an expensive hobby I know that. My Grandad's 450D cost him.. well I don't know, a lot, but since then he's bought a wide angle lens (which personally I'm not a fan of unless it is used in the right circumstances), a macro lens (which I would get a LOT of use out of, but I doubt he would) and I think it may have come with a telescopic but I may be fibbing there.

hi rachel! i'm a newbie too and i'm really excited to be doing the project! i started photography with a point and shoot and moved to an slr several years back! my suggestion is to comb craigslist for people upgrading. you can often find some great deals on dslr's. that's where i got my first one! good luck with the prj=oject!
January 8th, 2011
About the flash.. I honestly rarely use it, prefer natural light. It's fine when I've used it. Just not on macro, which is more than half if what I do.
January 8th, 2011
@kellitolocka Ah brilliant, I hadn't actually thought about that. I think once I've finished university and I'm a bit closer to home I'll be able to use my Grandad's more often just to get the feel for it. I've always been a fan of Canons and so I'd probably get a Canon DSLR, but I know there's the ongoing debate of which is better.. a Nikon or a Canon? Ha ha. Plus, with them all currently trying to bring out 'better models' with 'greater megapixels', the older models are guaranteed to come down in price... I don't need a camera with a ridiculously high number of megapixels!
January 8th, 2011
@kellitolocka Sorry! I didn't mean that to come out in an essay ha ha. I really like your photos :)
January 8th, 2011
@myla Oh same here, to be honest I can't fault my camera in natural light... It's a brilliant little thing (I just wish it had a greater zoom). I only ask because I take it with me on nights on and the flash can be a bit problematic.. especially when you have a bunch of friends posing and you're just like "oh.. just one more second... and another.." ha :)
January 8th, 2011
Hi Rachel! I'm new too and so far I am loving this! It's just sooo much fun!
January 8th, 2011
@positronicmommy Ditto! In fact I've spent the last hour on here rather than looking at papers for my literature review!!
January 8th, 2011
Hi Rachel, I'm new this year too.. really like your photos, and your dog :)

I'm trying a theme for the whole year.. a lot of people have said they have tried it and it just doesn't work.. but mostly the response has been very positive and incredibly encouraging.

Everyone on here is so nice and it is so much fun; it's taking up all my time now!!!!
January 8th, 2011
@katiegc24 I wish she was my dog!! She's my uncle's but isn't she beautiful?? I'm more of a cat person personally but after spending the night at theirs, with this gorgeous Samoyed sitting on my lap (as big as she was) and drinking my tea I fell in love :)

Ooh what theme are you doing??
January 8th, 2011
@rlinaker - it's fairly obvious when you look at my photos.. I'm taking pics of a rubber duck every day for a year!! :P
January 8th, 2011
@katiegc24 Haha I realised after I asked I should have just looked, absolutely adorable :) and a really great idea. I think I should do similar when I go travelling (well, travelling my own way... I won't have time to take a year out... so I intend to do a month here.. a month there.. save up.. another month... so on!). I just need a little inanimate friend to keep me company!
January 8th, 2011
A bunch of great people here and i'm following a few of you now. :)
January 8th, 2011
@stace0528 I actually can't believe how friendly people are here! It's so lovely.
January 8th, 2011
I just started this week too! Like you, I'm hoping to stick with it by being here with so many other people. I'm here hoping to learn about all the different functions on all my different cameras.. can't say I'm going to have the best pictures here, but this will make a great photo album when I'm finished! Good luck to all of you!
January 8th, 2011
@lissuhllama Yeah! That's exactly what I plan to do, I'm no professional but I like have a good mess around on the cameras... and besides... a photo for every day of the year... the end product will be brilliant!
January 8th, 2011
Welcome to this project. I am in my second year and this is a great community. There will be times when you want to quite, just take your camera everywhere and take pictures. Last year I used a simple p&s camera so this year I treated myself to a DSLR. You do not need to have a DSLR to do this project, this project will make you a better photographer and you will meet many great people. Another piece of advice, learn your camera. I am doing that know with my DSLR. Please look at my project and if you like what you see follow me and I will follow you back.
January 8th, 2011
@cirasj Oh wow, I admire you for doing this for your second year. I definitely want to have a go at using my camera to its maximum potential, especially the S7000 for some reason. As I've said, it hasn't got a lot of megapixels but I would really like to have a go with the manual stuff to see what I can make this baby do! :)
January 8th, 2011
Well I am new to this project at well. I started late but hope to stick with it. I have a DSLR (Cannon EOS) and a Cannon powershot. I have enjoyed looking at everyones photos. I do hope to learn a little to since I don't know how to really use my eos other than being on auto.
January 8th, 2011
I am really new also. I hope to learn from people who have taken really nice photos for some time now. I have alot to learn. I just take pictures, now I have to really LOOK at what I am taking to make it an even better picture.
January 8th, 2011
I'm new as well. [:
Good luck!
January 8th, 2011
My first week too ... we'll see if I can do another 51! If you see a picture of a cat, taken just before midnight, you'll know I was short on time or inspiration! (Unless it's a really good picture of a cat :)
January 8th, 2011
I'll continue the theme. I am new here as well, I have got a 550D (on day 4 and after i started using it) and am loving it! I really like this community.
January 8th, 2011
Another newbies here, who hasn't even managed to upload a profile pic yet!

I use a Canon G10, which takes great pics for it's size, but I am thinking that after a year I way well be seeing if I can justify a DSLR....

Have started browsing the pics of those who have posted here, but real life is calling!
Will return & look at some more amazing pics later!
January 9th, 2011
@daffodill @duds @hawaii @xmckenzie @ewffan @scraplady Welcome to all the newbies :) I'm going to have a mooch at everybody's photos soon, I just need to really work on my lit review (considering the day has been spent unpacking... I'm ashamed! I take everything but the kitchen sink with me anywhere I go!)
January 9th, 2011
This is my first week as well - the community aspect is great! Hopefully will follow through until the end. I have a Canon Rebel but still my favourite camera was my first P&S - Canon Powershot A80. Still miss that camera!

Good luck to all the newbies! ;-)
