Profiles and things

March 20th, 2011
It's a while since I started a topic (I think!) and I felt like saying some stuffs so here goes:

Do you prefer it when someone has things written on their profile? I certainly do - and I don't really tend to follow people who don't have something about themselves up there. It's nice to know who you are following - male or female, whereabouts in the world they live, why they started etc. It always makes me quite sad when I find someone whose photos I like - maybe they do a lot of stunning landscapes - but you just don't know where they were taken or who by. I know loads of people have said they much prefer it when photos come with description; I prefer it when people come with a description..

So if you haven't written a lil bit on your profile, have a go! Just sayin'.

* In other news.. just for a bit of blatant attention seeking.. it's my 18th birthday on Thursday, so prepare yourself for a barrage of alcohol-based/upside down/wonky/drunken photos over the next few days. And if he is lucky/if I remember, Greg may get a bit tipsy too :P ) *

I totally agree if someone follows me I check their site too and if I like their photos I am still unlikely to follow them if they have nothing on their profile. I like to know a little about who I am following, their "story" what their experience is, that kind of thing...
I also like a bit of information about photos, not just a shot with a number...

@katiegc24 I would like to at least know the country someone is in, especially when I see a photo and can't figure out where in the world it is. It is also nice to know a bit more about the person as well.

Have a Happy Birthday, Kate!

Agree! A little/or a lot of background gives a little/or a lot of understanding of how that person sees the world around them ... and yes, too to the fact of where they are - and where the pic was taken. For me, the profile gives depth (I can almost see it through their eyes) ... whereas a person with no profile - their pic is usually just a picture.

What I enjoy too is seeing which pics that person FAV's - as it gives me insight of what sparks their interest.

Happy birthday to you! 3 cheers!!!

@thebluegnu @michellegaynor @katiegc24 @annielf
I have always had something on my profile, I had updated it once before but you have inspired me to edit it and add more details... check it out if you like.
March 20th, 2011
@katiegc24 I did not put a profile on my page basically because I simply didn't know what to say...however, you have encouraged me to put something up. I also like reading about other people and where they are from, so I figured I should be just as considerate! Thank you for the little nudge to write something about myself. :) Happy snapping!
March 20th, 2011
@katiegc24 Just updated mine. Like to read about people esp where they are from and some particulars about why and what....
March 20th, 2011
@thebluegnu - i have the same thoughts. whenever i get a comment from someone, i check out their profile and their album. i also like photos with captions. of course there are photographs that are so stunning they speak for themselves, but i suppose most people like me would appreciate the little story, no matter how mundane, behind the photograph.

@katiegc24 - have a great birthday, kiddo!
March 20th, 2011
Yes, I agree - I like to know where someone is, and something about them & and their life!
March 20th, 2011
i must agree !! i do like to "know" something about the people i follow , it makes u kinda understand more if u know what i mean :S

altho in saying that i do follow some that havent written anything
March 20th, 2011
I agree too, its nice to know something about our fellow 365'ers, and Happy Birthday too
March 20th, 2011
I'm with @flamez on this one. I do like reading about the people I follow, but not having anything written is not a deal breaker as to whether or not I follow them. Some people don't feel comfortable sharing information on the internet, while others don't feel comfortable writing about themselves.
March 20th, 2011
I agree. How am I supposed to stalk with no details?! I at least need a first name and city to go on...
March 20th, 2011
HA! That's hilarious, Craig! I have had stuff in my profile from day one, but I don't think it needs to be there in order for me to enjoy someone's photography. It does add a degree of 'depth' to them, as others have said, though.
March 20th, 2011
Oh, defiantly. You can always tell something about a person even if it's just a short sentence. I would dearly LOVE to know where all the people I'm following are from too.
March 20th, 2011
@pete21 - Well, wouldya believe it, I'm from this lil corner of the world nobody has ever heard of.. it's called Naaaaaaaaaarfolk, and it's very, *very* flat. ;)
March 20th, 2011
@katiegc24 Glad you started this topic, Kate. It's been a process for me...it took me forever just to figure out how to post my pic on my profile! I did put up some info about why I started the project, but realized just now that I never said where I'm from...South Dakota (USA). I do appreciate knowing where other 365er's are from, so I'm going to edit my profile and add that info. Tell Greg not to get too tipsy and you have a great 18th birthday!! ( :
March 20th, 2011
@katiegc24 Would that be in the good ole U S of A? LOL
March 20th, 2011
Hm, I was just wondering if I should add to my profile, and now you've all convinced me. Here I go! :)
March 20th, 2011
@pete21 - No, it's called Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarfolk, and it's full of traaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaactors and things. In Ingland.
March 20th, 2011
I have to disagree with the majority here. For me, photography, as in all art, is about interpretation. If a person takes an interesting picture that you admire, it should not matter whether you know where the person is or why they took that shot. For me, part of the fun is wondering, but not knowing for sure.
March 20th, 2011
@katiegc24 Sounds like a great place to live, Does everyone there drive a traaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaactor?
March 20th, 2011
@pete21 - Oooooohh aaaaaaarrr thaaaat they doo :D
March 20th, 2011
I completely agree. I like to know a little about the person. It makes it more of a personal thing for me, and I'm able to see "where they're coming from" in their photo journey.

Have a wonderful birthday you doll!!
March 20th, 2011
I like info about people and stories/info to go with photos. :-)
March 20th, 2011
@melissachi Checked out your photos, absolutely brilliant, I love Greg.
March 20th, 2011
Happy 18th early! You and Greg stay safe and have a lot of fun!
March 20th, 2011
@rogerprice Would love to accept the compliment, but I think you meant @katiegc24 :) And her photos of Greg are awesome.
March 20th, 2011
@melissachi *blush mode engaged* thank you
March 20th, 2011
@melissachi Ooops you're right
March 20th, 2011
Doesn't faze me if they choose not to identify themselves. I can find out all I need to know from interracting with them or in many cases, through their photos. I have only my age, location and FB / Flickr urls. If someone wants to know something, they're free to ask.
March 21st, 2011
i like a story. and i am working on a series of landscape shots so youse can all get to know my town a little more...
March 21st, 2011
ah! I totally forgot to post one.. thanks for the reminder!
March 21st, 2011
I only have a sentence about me *ashamedly stares at feet*.
I didn't think that anyone would bother just reading what fits onto the first page you see, and actually go on to my actual profile page to read about me, so it seemed like a waste of time writing something of any detail.
But if in fact people are interested in reading a story, maybe I should write something more substantial.
March 21st, 2011
@cherryflakes - I can't speak for everyone else, but I know that before clicking 'follow' I read a bit about who it is who will be posting photos onto my homepage for the next year.. and I have a bit of a look through their photos first to see if I like them.. I'm following quite a lot of people, and all of them because I like their photos and have had a look at their profile first! I don't think that following someone simply because they followed you is what this is all about.. and it is interesting to find out a bit about other people and what they like doing etc :D
