My faithful little Nikon s200 is dead. It has the lens error of doom and nothing I've tried has fixed it. It's 4 years old now, so I'm guessing that getting it fixed won't be exactly value for money.
So....I've been looking at other cameras. I've seen a few I like, but am intrigued by the Canon Powershot SX220 - does anyone have any feedback for that, or any advice on a good P&S for the smallest amount of money?
@kmrtn6 Thanks Kylie, I'm looking for something small though as I already have a DSLR and the P&S will be purely to carry around with me when it's too much hassle to take the big guy out!
The Panasonic Lumix line seem to be well-regarded by even the most discriminating in the photo community. I know a journalist with the Dallas Morning News who replaced his Leica P&S with a Panasonic Lumix, and loves it. I have one as well, and have been extremely pleased with it. Long zoom, simple to operate, very compact, reasonably priced. Good luck!
I was given a Canon PowerShot A560 as a gift. It's probably at the bottom of the ladder as far as p&s goes, but as I've learned how to work with it, my shots are getting better. I'm sure it was affordable, and they've probably even improved some its features by now. The best thing for you to do is to find a place where you can see what's out there and fool around with them in the store.
I'm on my second Panasonic Lumix ... been delighted with both and a lot lighter than my Canon G9 P&S which I also love ... the Lumix is less expensive too!
I think this link will help you, really extensive review! http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q311TravelZoomGroupTest/
I own the Lumix one, but without the GPS and I'm really happy with it, it can almost do what a DSLR can... I did water-crowns yesterday!
Hope this helps with your decision.
The newer P&S nikon's a quite good. I have the S570, but think it's been discontinued. The S3000 is pretty good (I have a friend who has it) and there are some of those floating around still for fairly cheap prices.
@coastandcactus@pamfromcalgary@smevvy@nimi@tolpol@olivetreeann@elizabeth@griff@geertje@wormentude@n0pants3ver Thank you all for taking time to lend me your advice :)
I want something compact, so the larger cameras are out of the running as I already have my Canon 400D for that :)
I'll definitely have a look at the Panasonic Lumix's now as well! I'll let you know what I go for in the end (if my Dad will lend me the money of course lol)
@minxymissk My cousin has the same camera, which I recommended. It's great, as it has manual control but a great P&S as well. There's a newer version out now, the SX230, but either are excellent.
@vikdaddy Thank you - it was the combination of the manual controls and the 16x zoom that attracted me. @sparkle Thanks :)
I'm going to have a busy couple of days deciding!
i just ordered a canon powershot S95 really excited because not only does it have an hdr function but also shoots in raw and has aeb which means i will be able to do hdr manually. althou i love my canon 30d sometimes i really want a good camera that i can put in my pocket now i'll have one.
@minxymissk - The Panasonics give great results too. My sister has one that's a few years old now and has printed one of her photos onto 20x30inch canvas and you wouldn't know it came from such a small camera.

I'm getting this little beauty in a couple weeks. :]
